Chapter 32: Apprentice Alchemist

Since it was a big and well-stocked store, it was very popular. However, since they intentionally mixed in poor quality products and the alchemist there also told lies to drive down the buying price, I’m evaluating them as the worst.

For me, I would never enter that store again in the future.

I will tell Mia truthfully that it’s not a trustworthy store.

Now then, I now understood that the store I had high hopes for was no good.

The other Alchemist Shop I know of is the one in the west.

According to Mia, the store was “cosy”. Furthermore, Their product lineup couldn’t be called good, even as mere lip service. Plus, their staff wasn’t that friendly.

Honestly, not a single aspect of that store sounded reliable. However, the previous one sounded reputable but was horrible in the end.

There are no other Alchemist Shops that I know of, so let’s go take a look.

Deciding so, I recalled the directions Mia told me and headed West.

“Hmm, was it around here?”

Looking around, there were only private houses.

Comparing this street to the one in front of the inn or the Adventurer’s Guild, it was narrower and there were fewer pedestrians. Much more peaceful.

I could see women hanging laundry in their gardens while children were running around chasing each other.

This area was different from the central business area and seemed to be a wide residential area.

She said that if I walked around this area I could see the signboard, but I can’t seem to find such things.

If I could find an easy-to-understand symbol, it would make my life very easy. However, this certainly was a residential area and I couldn’t see any signs…

The gazes from the ladies inside their gardens are starting to hurt me because I’ve been roaming around for a while now.

They definitely see me as a suspicious person.

“Excuse me…”

“No! I’m not a suspicious person, I’m just looking for an Alchemist Shop!”

Called out by someone, I spouted out a hasty excuse and spun around to face them.

A young girl with long, wavy blonde hair with big, blue eyes who looked around 15 years old stood there.

Her skin looked as delicate as silk.

Her good looks and her caring gaze gave me an impression of a gentle and proper lady.

A white blouse, a light blue ribbon, and her navy skirt; her choice of clothing accentuated her beautiful blonde hair even more.

In a residential area like this, I didn’t remotely imagine meeting someone this beautiful.

“Are you looking for an Alchemist Shop?”

I snapped back to myself after the girl in front of me asked a question.

I am far older in mental age. It’s a bit stupid to be stunned when you see a girl who looked like a high school student.

Breaking out of my stupor, I calmed myself down.

“Yes, I was looking for the store to sell my materials. I was told by an acquaintance that it was around here…”

“Ahh, it’s quite difficult for first-time visitors to find the store for the first time.”

“Do you know where it is?”

“Yes, I’ll guide you. There’s only our store around here after all.”

“Oh, that helps–wait, ‘our’?”

I tilted my head reflexively at her words.

“I am known as Lumia. I’m still an apprentice alchemist, but I’m working in the store.”

She smiled a bit shyly while introducing herself as an apprentice.

“I see! I’m Shuu, an adventure. Please kindly lead the way.”

“Yes, leave it to me!”

Lumia smiled happily and started leading the way.

Even if the items in the store are doubtful, I would be willing to come visit often when there’s such a cute girl here.

“About alchemists, how do you become one?”

On the way to Lumia’s shop, it would be too awkward to have no conversation so I asked her a question.

What kind of occupation is an alchemist anyway? If someone can create potions with some kind of tool then can that person call himself an alchemist? Can everyone become an alchemist then?

“First of all, to become an alchemist, you need to acquire a skill called Alchemy.”

“If you don’t have the Alchemy skill, you can’t make potions?”

“If you have the required materials and tools, you will be able to make the potions. However, it is very time-consuming and to produce enough to make a living is….”

In other words, you can’t earn enough to make a living without the skill.

I also have Detection and Appraisal, so I understand how convenient skills are. My efficiency in collecting materials is completely different with and without using them.

“Since you’re an apprentice alchemist, does that mean you also have the Alchemy skill?”

“Yes. However, I acquired it only recently…”

I heard from Rabis that apart from having them since birth, skills can be acquired later in life through continuous efforts.

Lumia-san seemed to have put in tremendous work to acquire this skill.

Since I was transferred here, I felt a little guilty because I received my skills effortlessly from God.

As if to gloss over those feelings, I congratulated Lumia on her skill acquisition. Having heard that, she smiled happily.

“Since you’ve acquired the Alchemy skill, does that mean you’re a pro now?”

“I haven’t passed the national examination for alchemists yet, so I can’t call myself an alchemist.”

Apparently, to become a full-fledged alchemist, it is necessary to pass the national examination and be officially recognized by the country.

The process seemed more structured than I imagined. It’s a difficult road to trek.

Actually, being an alchemist here could be similar to being a civil officer like in my previous world. It seemed to be quite an elite job.

It feels a bit weird when I realized that the alchemist man I met before coming here also passed the national examination.

“Oh, we’re here. This is the shop I am training at.”

After talking about alchemists to pass the time for a while, we arrived at the store Lumia was working at.

The shop stood right there, blending in with the other houses inside this residential area.

It was slightly larger than the other houses. It doesn’t stand out, so if you miss the small sign on the road, you’ll pass by.

“Here you go.”

Lumia opened the door, and I followed her inside.

The inside wasn’t that spacious, however, the wooden walls and counters gave out a calming atmosphere.

Potions were neatly lined up on the shelves, and a light blue female underwear was hung from the ceiling.

“Eh? Underwear?”

The moment I said so foolishly, Lumia, who was next to me, collected it with a speed that I could not follow with my eyes.

“Ah, ahahaha. Excuse me. Please kindly wait for a moment.”

Lumia’s face glowed bright red and she smiled at me awkwardly. She then immediately disappeared into the back room.

“Mou! Safie-san! Didn’t I tell you to stop hanging laundry inside the store!?”

“Isn’t it fine? We don’t have customers anyway.”

“A customer is here to sell materials! And he’s a man!”

For the time being, the doors were closed, but it wasn’t soundproof. Lumia was agitated, so I could hear their conversation here and there.

The culprit who hanged the laundry inside the store seemed to be the person inside and she could be Lumia’s master too.

I could understand why Lumia who seemed so graceful was being so loud when faced with this situation.

“Of all things, why is my underwear――”

Oh, that light blue underwear was Lumia’s?

Unintentionally, my mind conjured up an image of Lumia wearing that underwear automatically.

It’s quite awkward to have seen the underwear of someone I’ve just met.

It is not good to eavesdrop, so I diligently observed the inside of the store while ignoring the conversation I sometimes heard.

The shelves contained bottles filled with mysterious materials and tools that I can’t fathom what they can be used for.

What is this round ball used for? I’m interested but I don’t know what will happen if I touch it carelessly so I stopped myself from reaching out.

Certainly, the number of items may be fewer than the previous store, but there are a lot of products being sold already.

When I appraised the potions, they were all displayed as high quality.

Yeah, at least I think it’s more trustworthy than the one I went to.

“I’m sorry, my master is a bit busy at the moment. Shall I appraise the materials for you instead?”

When I looked into Lumia’s eyes, I could see an apologetic expression on her face, screaming, “I’m just an apprentice.”

Even though she’s still an apprentice, she’s properly learning how to become an actual alchemist and she has the skills for it. Plus, she has a gentle personality and can be trusted.

“No problem.”

“Thank you! I will prepare tea, so please take a seat here for a moment.”

Replying so, Lumia smiled with relief and headed inside to prepare some tea.

Chapter 31: Selling Materials

The day after the nominated request was completed.

After finishing my breakfast at the dining hall, I started thinking about visiting some alchemists as advised by Claus.

Thanks to the money I received from Claus from the nominated request and the extra sales of Kurtz fruits, my wallet is still very full.

Since I have money now, I am thinking of buying magic tools. However, I do not know how much the price will be so having more money is always a good idea.

The problem now is that I do not know where Alchemist Shops are located.

It would have been nice if Claus also recommended me a place.

I’m new to this town and I’m still unfamiliar with the geography, so let’s just ask.

Nice timing. Mia is coming over to collect my plates.

“Hey, Mia. Are there any Alchemist Shops in this city?”

“Sure nya. I’ve visited one near the South Gate, and another one in the west.”

“I see. Which one was better?”

“The store in the south was bigger and the product lineup was better. The one in the west was smaller and the staff was quite blunt. For their skills, I don’t know the difference because I’m not a pro nya.”

Having heard that, the one in the South sounded better to me.

“Got it. Thank you. I have some business with them so I’m going out today,”

“Nya! Shuu, since you can judge materials very well, I’m sure you can see their level of skills clearly. Tell me which one was better when you come back nya!”

“Sure, leave it to me!”

Since I received the information I wanted from Mia, that much I can do easily.

I’m not an alchemist, but because I have Appraisal, I can see the quality of items without being deceived.

Leaving my seat, I left and headed towards the Alchemist Shops that Mia told me about.

“So this is an Alchemist Shop…”

Following Mia’s directions, I arrived at what seemed to be the shop of an alchemist.

It was a large two-story store, much larger than I had imagined.

From its name of “Alchemist Shop”, I imagined a small store like Claus’ drugstore. However, this is completely different.

Although it was not on the main street, it is near the South castle gate with many people coming and going.

Being able to set up a shop here meant that it’s probably quite popular.

Since Mia told me that their product lineup was impressive, I entered the store with high expectations.

The first eye-catching items displayed were the healing potions with the effects of healing wounds.

Bottles containing blue liquid were lined up neatly on the shelf.

The store was spacious and clean. Since they are selling medical products such as potions, I think it’s a good consideration to have.

Their main customers seemed to be people who frequently rely on potions AKA adventurers.

Warriors and wizards with strong-looking, muscular bodies were grunting while browsing through the potions.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the price. One bottle of Low Potion was priced at 6 gold coins.

Ooh, expensive. However, it is a magical medicine that will instantly heal your wounds just by drinking it down.

Advanced medical technology like in my previous world was not available here, so maybe this high price was reasonable.

“So? Do you want to buy a potion just in case?”

“For our savings, isn’t 6 gold coins a bit too harsh?”

“But I often hear stories about lives that were saved by potions too.”

It’s such a painful expense to have for just one bottle of medicine. I understand why these adventurers were scrutinizing the potions so seriously.

By the way, what kind of injuries can a Low Potion heal in the first place?

【Low Potion: Normal Grade】

With this potion, you can instantly heal cuts, abrasions, and bruises. Although it cannot completely heal deep wounds and fractures, it can help with pain relief and can stop the bleeding.

Using Appraisal, the effects of the potion were displayed.

I don’t know exactly how deep the wound must be for it to be completely cured, but minor injuries seemed to be healed instantly. In the case of serious injuries, it can lower the pain and stop the bleeding.

If you are fighting a monster, even slight injuries can hinder your movements.

Having a potion can potentially reduce the risk of having low performance, and it can help save your life in critical times.

I happen to visit monsters-infested forests to collect materials regularly. I think it’s a good idea to have some potions in case of emergencies.

Originally, I only came here to sell materials. However, maybe it’s better to buy some potions too.

【Low Potion: Somewhat Poor Grade】

A potion that has deteriorated due to long-term storage and was mixed with water. Be careful because it is less effective than typical potions.

“Hm? The quality is different?”

Gazing at the row of potions, I noticed that some poor quality ones were mixed into it.

And not just one or two bottles.

…….This is clearly intentional, isn’t it?

“Sir, is something the matter?”

As I tilted my head, a man wearing a robe who seemed to be an alchemist called out to me.

Although his demeanor was humble, his eyes were appraising me.

Somehow, I kinda hate his gaze.

“Ah, it’s nothing. I was just surprised at the price. However, as the effects are amazing, I’m sure that these were reasonably priced.”

As expected, I can’t easily comment on the poor quality of the potions while the store was full of customers. Therefore, I glossed over my words.

“Yes, we are trying hard to try and save more people, but considering the costs of the materials, this is our limit…”

Are you trying to save as much as possible people with poor quality products mixed in? Sarcastic remarks were swallowed back down into my throat.

“I don’t have enough cash on hand to buy potions, so I’ll try another day. But for today, I have some materials that I want to sell, is that okay?”

“Ho! Well then, please show them to me in the back room.”

At the moment when I said that I had insufficient cash, his eyes suddenly became cold, but when I said that I brought in materials, he immediately smiled.

Such an easy-to-understand two-faced guy.

Guided by the alchemist, I was led to a room in the back of the store.

The floor covered with a red carpet and the sofa was fluffy. Decorations such as vases and paintings were also abundant in numbers.

“Here is some Yamadokoro that I want to sell. I heard that the Alchemist Shops will buy it for a higher price than the Adventurer’s Guild.”

He’s an alchemist who sells poor quality potions, but what about his decision in purchasing materials?

Honestly, since I already have a poor impression of this place, I don’t want to sell my materials here. However, since I promised Mia to tell her my opinions about the two shops, I’ll use this chance to test his reactions.

“Yamadokoro is a material used to make potions that improve physical ability. It’s definitely one of the materials we alchemists require.”

Ooh, what Claus told me seemed to be the truth then.

“However, that is the case with materials that were harvested with the correct method. Apparently, the Yamadokoro you have here has deteriorated due to being processed incorrectly.”

“……Eh?”

“Fine hairs grow on Yamadokoro, right? If you remove that, the nutrients of the material will leak away and deteriorate faster. Therefore, at this quality, the purchase price will be about three copper coins.”

【Yamadokoro】

By removing the thin hairs that grow on the roots, it is possible to prevent the leakage of medicinal components. Thus, it can be used to concoct high-quality medicines and potions.

Wishing for the method of collecting Yamadokoro, I appraised it again. The result was the exact opposite of what the alchemist said.

Claus and his father would put nothing but facts into their beloved encyclopedia, and the skill given to me by God wouldn’t lie to me.

Ho. To even tell such an obvious lie to buy my materials at a bargain.

I will not say anything about the poor quality potions being mixed into the shelves because it is under their scope of management, but I won’t stand him dissing the materials that I collected with much determination.

“I see. It’s fine that you won’t buy them. I will go try another store.”

“W-wait a momen–”

I put my Yamadokoro back into my Magic bag and left the room. From behind me, I heard the flustered voice of the alchemist trying to stop me.

However, I left the store without paying any more attention to him.

Chapter 30: Nominated Request Completed

After collecting all the requested materials, I returned to Claus’ store to deliver the materials.

“Excuse me, I’m the adventurer Shuu.”

“What is it? Did you have more questions about the materials?”

After knocking on the door, perhaps because he was free this time, but Claus came out promptly.

“No, I came here to deliver the requested materials.”

“What? All of them?”

“Yes, 3 Yamadokoro, 7 Kikyou flowers, and 10 Kurtz fruits, correct?

“……..First, I’ll check them out so come inside.”

After I pulled each material one by one out of the Magic Bag to show him, Claus led the way to the inner room with a difficult face.

As usual, he’s making the same “Shut up and follow me,” stance, I’ll do what he wants and follow him obediently.

Entering the meeting, Claus and I sat down on the sofa.

“I would normally serve you some tea, however, the Kurtz fruits will deteriorate so I won’t waste any more time. For now, show me the Kurtz fruits first.”

“Since the Kurtz fruits are stored inside my Magic Bag, they won’t deteriorate over time.”

“What you’re holding there is a Magic Bag?”

Claus looked at me suspiciously, so I pulled out a barrel that would never fit inside a normal bag to show him.

As a result, Claus looked at me with a stunned expression.

Since it’s impossible for an entire barrel to fit into an ordinary shoulder bag, he had no choice but to believe me.

After a while, Claus came back to his senses.

“I won’t ask why you have it, but it’s more valuable than you think. You should not show it off carelessly. Bad fellows may come to snatch it away.”

Claus gazed at me with his sharp eyes and gave me advice.

I wrote it off as one of the gifts from God so I didn’t pay much attention to it, however, this bag seems to be much more valuable than I previously perceived it as.

In fact, I’ve been living in this world for a while, but I’ve never met anyone with a magic bag.

【Magic Bag】

A bag that can store things. Since the time is stopped inside, the collected materials will not deteriorate. However, it cannot contain humans or creatures.

It was created after extended efforts from the highest-ranked magicians and alchemists, so it is extremely pricey. Seldomly appears on the market. Possessed by some head merchants, high-ranking nobles, and royalty.

O-oohh, when I used Appraisal with the goal of more information in mind, I discovered that it was more valuable than I expected.

Certainly, if an F-rank adventurer possesses such an item, it would be reasonable to feel suspicious.

I know the convenience of a Magic Bag firsthand.

According to Claus, it would be better not to show it to anyone apart from trusted people.

“Thank you for your advice. I’ll be careful in the future.”

“Ah, you do that. Well, it’s good to know that I can request for Kurtz fruits without feeling any reservations in the future from you. However, let’s see the quality first.”

Claus told me to show him the materials, so I lined up Yamadokoro, three-petaled Kikyou flowers, and Kurtz fruits on the table.

By the way, the Kurtz fruits here are the red-ranked ones as per the request.

“No way, for you to have collected all of them in a day. Perhaps you already have them in possession?……. Nah, that ignorance wasn’t an act.”

I have a feeling that something cruel and rude was being said about me, but I’ll keep quiet as he’s an important client.

Claus put on gloves and lifted each of the materials to check from various angles.

“….I’m surprised. Everything is perfect. The staff at the Adventurer’s Guild urged me to try requesting you, so I thought I’d give it a try. This is beyond my imagination. Your collection speed, on top of that, the quality of these materials collected using the correct method. Apparently, your skills seem to be the real deal.”

Claus, who was prideful all this time, praised me with a gentle expression.

I am very glad that I was acknowledged by him because I know how he usually acts.

“Thank you. However, it was thanks to Claus-san’s encyclopedia that I was able to collect the materials smoothly this time.”

“I- is that so! That’s because it’s the information that I and my father have put together over the years. Naturally, it’s useful.”

O-oh? Claus looks happy. This is the first time I have seen such an innocent look.

He seems to deem the encyclopedia that he worked on with his father as very important, and I think he was happy because I praised it.

“Oops, if I talk too long, the Kurtz fruits will deteriorate.”

Claus, who had been talking about the encyclopedia for a long time, suddenly returned to his senses.

Since I probably won’t have a chance to chat with him after this, let’s ask him now.

“Ah, I have a question regarding the Kurtz fruits. Would you accept ones with even higher quality than these?

“What? Higher than these? Show me.”

Since he said so, I brought out the Highest Quality Kurtz fruit for him to see.

“Wh-, it’s huge!”

The red-ranked Kurtz fruits I showed him just now was at best the size of a softball.

However, the highest quality one I’ve brought out now is about the size of a basketball.

“To bring it up to this size, how much magic power do you have?”

“W-well, I seem to have a lot of magic power….”

How tough is it for ordinary people to provide magic power for Kurtz fruits, I wonder? Since I lack that knowledge, I answered him vaguely.

“I’ve never seen such a bulging Kurtz fruit. How effective would it be if I used it to make medicine…”

Claus mumbled while observing the large Kurtz fruit.

As expected, it seems that the value has jumped up greatly, just like what Appraisal-sensei taught me.

“It seems that the value of this Kurtz fruit differs from the others a lot.”

“Yes. It’s in a different league than the ones before. This fruit, just one, can easily cost 10 gold coins.”

No way, with just one fruit, my earnings can easily exceed the reward of the nominated request. It is the most expensive material that I have ever harvested.

I’m glad I picked the red-ranked ones just in case to fulfill the request.

“Then, I’ll put this one back now.”

“Wait! Let me buy it! I’ll give you 10 gold coins separately!”

Although this was not the expected outcome, there was no separate rule from the Guild that prohibited individual buying and selling.

“Okay, how many will you buy?”

“You have more than one!?”

“Yes, about ten!”

“Gnununu, I don’t have 100 gold coins…!”

Were you willing to buy everything if you had the money?

“So, what’s your order?”

“Three! Give me three of those big-sized Kurtz fruits!”

Finally, after I enquired again, Claus gave me his ultimate answer after much internal conflict.

Apparently, he seems to be able to pay an extra 30 gold coins upfront. A pharmacy is surprisingly profitable if he can cough up this much money out of a sudden.

After giving him the Kurtz fruits, Claus entered the inner room and came back with a leather pouch.

“The reward money for the nominated request plus the extra cash for the large Kurtz fruits are inside here.

I immediately checked the contents and found that it contained exactly 34 gold coins.

“I have confirmed the amount. Then, please sign here for your request.”

“Sure.”

The request is completed when the client, Claus, signs the form.

After that, on the way home, I can hand in the request form at the Guild.

It seems like my work for today is finally over.

“I will request if there are materials I want again. I will process the Kurtz fruits so you can go now.”

Cradling the Kurtz fruits within his arm, he crisply said so.

Even though he was clearly satisfied with the request, his way of speaking surely doesn’t change at all.

He’s not looking down on F-rank adventurers, but this is simply his personality.

“Oh, this is a tip, but depending on the material, you can earn more if you sell them to alchemists rather than to the Adventurer’s Guild. That applies to Kurtz fruits and Yamadokoro.”

Caus added as if he had just remembered, and disappeared into the inner room.

He probably can’t wait to process the Kurtz fruits anymore.

Even though he seems prideful judging from his way of speaking, I don’t think he’s a bad person.

Remembering Claus’ strange kindness, I laughed lightly and left the store.

Chapter 29: Kurtz Fruit

Feeling bloated after finishing my lunch, I prepared myself to head deeper into the forest for my last material, the Kurtz fruits.

Kurtz fruits like to grow in the shade and grow naturally in the habitats of many monsters.

I wish it didn’t grow in such dangerous areas, but it is pointless to complain because I’m in a world full of monsters.

What I can do is to search for the Kurtz fruits while avoiding monsters as much as possible. For that reason, I’ll use Detection regularly using magic stones.

“Magic stone, Detection!”

After activation, numerous silhouettes that looked like monsters were displayed in my sight.

Since I’m quite deep inside the forest, there were a lot of monsters.

On my right, huge bee monsters were flying around, and there were stubby caterpillar monsters in the front. Even if I try to avoid them and turn left, monkey monsters were hanging around on the trees and I am likely to be discovered.

Behind me, three goblins were tracing my footsteps.

So there are limits to using this method to escape monsters.

I don’t want to be caught by those bipedal monsters that are closing in on me, right at the edge of my detection range.

It should be a good idea to break through by going straight ahead since the caterpillar seems to be slow.

I decided to go ahead with that idea and moved forward while keeping my noise down as much as possible.

Then, two giant caterpillars soon came into sight.

【Kyapil】

A fat caterpillar monster.

Although it is slow, it can shoot strong threads, so be careful.

Kyapil thread is of high quality and is sometimes used to make clothes.

When it grows up, it becomes a butterfly monster called Morphus.

Using Appraisal, I found that it would be possible to break through as long as I pay attention to its thread.

Since the Kyapils were eating the plants growing on the ground, they seemed to be unaware of me.

I resolved myself and ran past them.

Suddenly, the Kyapils noticed me, stopped eating, and turned this way.

It reacted and chased after me, but they were slow and the distance increased.

Then, after I ran ahead for about 10 meters, the two Kyapils stopped.

If I didn’t know, I may think that they have given up, however, I know that there’s a possibility that they’re planning to shoot threads at me.

The Kyapils seemed to chew on something and spitted out a bundle of white threads straight at me.

Predicting that, I dodged behind a tree. Thanks to that, the threads of the Kyapils couldn’t catch me and stuck to the tree instead.

“Okay, I can collect the Kyapil threads– no, no. I don’t have that much time!”

I can collect the threads if I reach out, but there were too many monsters around. It would be troublesome if I get surrounded in this situation.

I cut off the temptation from the material and ran past, ignoring it.

As the Kyapils behind me saw me running off, and maybe lost the motivation, they went back to their original place dejectedly.

They don’t seem to chase after enemies that their threads can’t hit.

Since I was able to escape from the Kyapils, I used Detection to survey my surroundings again.

Although there were silhouettes of monsters in the distance, it wasn’t as crowded as just now.

Maybe the goblins didn’t want to fight with the Kyapils, since they have already withdrawn from my detection range.

As expected, the more monsters I can detect, the more nervous I feel. If I couldn’t use Detection in the first place, I wonder how many monsters I would need to fight with.

In any case, I think I travelled quite deep already. It shouldn’t be strange to find Kurtz fruits growing naturally here now.

“Detection!”

This time, I used the skill to search for materials instead of detecting monsters.

Within my sight, various materials were outlined in different colored lights. Perhaps since there are less people around here compared to the area around the entrance, the proportion of red materials has increased.

“They like to live in the shade right?”

As I recalled the info written on my memo about the Kurtz fruits, I focused my attention to the areas under the shade of the trees.

Then, I saw several red-coloured materials on some trees that looked like they could be my target.

Trees with similar fruits but were purple and blue were also lined up nearby.

The shape was a bit different, and the shape of the leaves was also different.

Probably, different materials were also mixed in here.

Claus didn’t mention anything like this to me though, the encyclopedia also didn’t note anything.

I have Appraisal so I can easily tell the difference, but I want to try and improve my observation skills.

Without the help of Appraisal, I challenged myself and observed each type carefully.

This fruit was similar to Kurtz fruits, but I feel that the shade was bluish-purple rather than purple.

And this one was very similar to the illustration seen in the encyclopedia, but the shape of the leaf was different.

That said, the remaining one must be the Kurtz fruit. Comparing it with the picture I have seen, I can’t see any differences.

【Kurtz Fruit】

A purple edible fruit.

By inserting magic power, it can swell greatly, and the taste, nutrition, and medicinal properties can be dramatically increased. The amount of magic power that can be stored is varied. It usually bursts when it reaches the size of a person’s face.

It grows in the shade. Rarely, you can also find Kiko and Bluwary growing nearby, so be careful not to make mistakes.

Using Appraisal, it was undoubtedly the Kurtz fruit.

It seems that similar fruits called  Kiko and Bluwary rarely grow next to it. Did I hit the jackpot?

Since I was able to tell apart the difference, it felt like a fun quiz. However, it turned out to be a rare occurrence so I’m not that happy.

“Now then, I need to give this fruit some magic power and collect it.”

Claus requested that I should collect the ones that are filled with as much magic power as possible.

I do not know how much magic power can be absorbed, but let’s try first.

I hold the fruit and let my magic flow.

“Fuu, behold the results of my training. Blunders like the adventurer’s plate cracking would not—”

As soon as I said that, the Kurtz fruit exploded.

“…………”

I intended to slowly pour in magic power, but it instantly swelled to the size of my face and burst.

I thought that the amount I used was already quite low, but the fruit doesn’t seem to agree with me.

The juice from the exploded Kurtz fruit splattered all over my face and clothing.

Licking the juice on my hand, it tasted like sweet grapes and was very delicious.

However, it’s no good since it exploded.

“Okay, let’s refocus and try again.”

No use crying over spilled milk. Fortunately, there are many Kurtz fruits, so a few failures do not hurt.

I’m glad it wasn’t acidic. I would have taken a lot of damage to my eyes if it was just now.

“Next one, let’s use even less magic power…..wha-!?”

Even though it received less power compared to the one before, this one had already exploded.

Once again, the juice spilled all over my face and body.

The adventurer’s plate could take this much power…. It seems like I shouldn’t use that as my standard.

Refocus and challenge the third Kurtz fruit.

As I let out the magic power within my body little by little, the Kurtz fruit suddenly swelled up greatly.

“Crap-!”

Halting my magic in haste, the Kurtz fruit stopped at the size of my face.

“Oh, if you put in this much magic power–ah.”

I was relieved for a while, but it seemed like the fruit had already reached its limit and it burst spectacularly.

…………This may prove to be a more difficult collection request than I imagined.

No, on the contrary, this is a perfect test for me. I can also practice magic control AND collect materials at the same time. Isn’t this killing two birds with one stone?

No matter what, as long as I stay positive, it will be fun.

I still have a lot of magic power and my clothes are already soaked with juice. There is nothing to lose.

I concentrated and focused on controlling my magic power, then poured my magic into fruit after fruit.

“It’s okay! You can do it! You should be okay with this much magic power! Fighting!”

I cheered on the Kurtz fruit that has already swelled up and still hasn’t burst.

Looking as if it would burst anytime, I carefully placed a knife I use for collection onto the stem while holding the fruit gently..

If the fruit receives even the slightest bit of shock now, it will definitely explode.

Since I know that, I carefully twisted the knife to cut the thin stem.

Finally, the fruit came off the stem and fitted snugly in my palm.

It felt like a heavy water balloon.

Gazing at it with bated breath, the Kurtz fruit didn’t burst.

“Yossha! Tenth Kurtz fruit GET!”

Since I finally collected them all with much suffering, I shouted out with happiness.

Done at last. I wonder how many I wasted before I collected all ten of them.

On top of times where the fruit over-absorbed magic power and exploded, there were also times when I sneezed and it exploded, or animals and monsters were lured by the smell and got in the way.

“That was a long process….”

If I had practiced more magic control since before, I wouldn’t have so much trouble now. However, this request could be considered a good practice.

If it’s the current me, I feel like I can activate Elementary Magic spells on an even smaller scale now.

“Oops, it’s not good to be too sentimental. Magic power will leak from Kurtz fruits after collection after all.”

The other nine were stored in the magic bag immediately, but I have to confirm the quality of this one first.

【Kurtz Fruit: Highest Quality】

A Kurtz fruit filled with highly dense magic power. The effects and sweetness of other Kurtz fruits are incomparable to ones with this grade.

“Hmm? Highest Quality is written?”

Furthermore, Appraisal-sensei even praised that the normal ones are incomparable to the one I have in my hands.

When the quality changes, its price also changes.

“Detection! …….Oh, ohh, it ranked up from Red to Orange.”

Using Detection, I discovered that the color of the material rank changed from Red to Orange.

In other words, this fruit turned into something as valuable as the White Snake skin.

“…Isn’t this different from the Kurtz fruit that Claus wanted?”

If I deliver this to Claus and he says it’s a different material and won’t accept it, what should I do then?

“In that case, I will need another one with the normal Red rank. I need to go collect another one?”

After considering the possible outcomes, I can’t go back yet. Since my control over magic power has also improved, it should not be as difficult as before.

In preparation for the worst-case scenario, once again, I decided to supply Kurtz fruits with magic power and collect them.

It was only after I finished collecting 10 Red-ranked Kurtz fruits that I realized that I could have just let magic power leak from the ones I already have to lower their grade.

Chapter 28: Digging Yamadokoro

Since I finished collecting the requested amount of Kikyou flowers, I moved towards the location of my second material, Yamadokoro, and arrived at the specified lake.

The lake was quietly surrounded by trees and felt like a hidden resting spot.

As if in search of drinking water, residents of the forest like deers and swans gathered to quench their thirst.

I didn’t know that there was such a calm waterside [1] in the Eastern Forest.

After collecting the Yamadokoro, let’s have lunch here.

A bit excited, I started to search for the Yamadokoro.

I heard that it grew naturally in places with a lot of water inside the soil and that it was near this lake.

“Detection.”

I imagined it so that it properly penetrated the ground as well. While having an image of water soaking into the ground, I activated Detection.

Then, not only materials on top of but also inside the ground were displayed.

Some red-coloured materials can be seen in the ground near the shore of the lake. Similarly, I can see a few red-coloured materials underneath the earth where it is still within range.

Other than those, I can see purple-coloured materials that looked like the bones of either monsters or animals.

Therefore, the red-coloured materials in the ground must be Yamadokoro.

After confirming that there are no monsters in the vicinity by using Detection with magic stones, I approached the location where the material was displayed.

The depth was about 20 cm. The material, buried underground, was around 15 centimeters of length.

“Let’s dig here then.”

I took out a shovel I bought out of the Magic Bag and started digging.

Since the dirt contained a lot of moisture from being near to a lake, I could dig in rather easily.

And just like that, I dug down and down.

Normally, I won’t be able to see underground, but since I have Detection, I can clearly see the red outline of the material shining deep down.

Therefore, I don’t need to fumble around and I can just dig straight to where the material is.

Continuing to dig down, the material began to show its appearance.

A white material surfaced from the light brown dirt.

【Yamadokoro】

A type of root that grows inside soil with lots of moisture. It often grows underground near rivers and lakes.

Edible, but not very delicious. However, it has high medicinal effects and is used to make medicine.

It is mainly effective to promote perspiration, has antitussive properties, and since it has cooling effects, it can alleviate fever, headache, asthma, etc.

It can improve the circulation of blood and magical power, therefore, it can temporarily boost your physical abilities.

No mistake, this is a Yamadokoro.

Even so, I knew that it had medicinal effects, but to even have an effect of boosting physical ability.

No wonder why it’s a red-coloured material.

Under normal circumstances, I would start digging quickly when I see a part of the material above ground, however, Claus demanded that I must not damage it.

Therefore, it is absolutely impossible to just dig wherever and however I want, and I can’t allow even a single scratch from my shovel.

Thus, it is necessary to dig around the material with the shovel first and finally dig it out gently by hand.

Pomp, pomp. The leftover dirt was scooped out and thrown aside.

It’s kind of fun. It feels like digging for potatoes when I was a kid.

Claus was worried about having placed a troublesome order, but for me, the request today is a nostalgic reminder of the past.

Ever since I grew up, I rarely got to play with soil. I felt like I’m returning to my childhood, touching the soil with my own two hands like this.

After digging around the Yamadokoro, slowly remove the soil by hand so as not to damage it.

Using the utmost caution, I carefully brushed away the remaining soil and the Yamadokoro suddenly shook.

Maybe I can pull it out by hand now. But it’s a trap.

The Yamadokoro has a root split in the middle and looks like a fork.

In other words, it’s stuck firmly in the ground much more than I expected.

We’re at the very, very last step and it would not be funny to mess up now.

I tried my best to remove the soil by hand, gently, as if I loved the material from the bottom of my heart.

After plucking out small amounts of soil like that, I could finally pull the Yamadokoro out completely.

“Yay! I finally collected a Yamadokoro!”

A rugged root that looked like a fork. When I wiped off the dirt with my fingers, its white, delicate skin was exposed.

“What a beauty.”

Most of it is covered with the soil now, but if you wash it with water, I should see beautiful white skin just like the radish. [2]

Probably because I went to such great lengths to acquire it, the Yamadokoro I held in my hand appeared to shine for a moment.

“…..Oops, I don’t have time to be fascinated. I have to make sure that it’s not scratched and I have to remove the roots too.”

After checking the Yamadokoro from various angles, I could not see any scratches or damaged parts. So, I pulled out the fine hair that grew from the root by hand.

It felt like the process of removing unwanted hair.

“Okay, now I have to collect the rest.”

After putting it inside my Magic Bag, I started to dig again with the shovel in my hand.

“Fuu, that’s enough for Yamadokoro.”

In total, I collected 6 Yamadokoro.

Claus requested three, however, these were close to where I was digging so I picked them up.

Well, it seems that red-coloured materials are very valuable, and it’s not difficult to sell them even if Claus doesn’t want it.

My hands, after digging all those Yamadokoro, are caked with dirt. Since my work is done, I want to wash my hands.

It would be easy to go wash at the lake, but times like this are where I can practice magic.

“Water Ball.”

I imagined it to be as big as a basketball, but when I activated it, a water ball that was about two times larger than that appeared.

I still can’t control magic power delicately enough.

I’m a little worried about the Kurtz fruits that I plan to collect after this.

However, the Water Ball this time is not as enormous as my first time, I can deem it as a steady improvement.

I removed all the dirt between my nails and wiped my hands with a towel.

As if knowing that I’ve completed my tasks, my stomach grumbled out loud.

“I’ve finished my collections too, so let’s have lunch now.’

I collected Kikyou flowers and dug out Yamadokoro. I think I deserve a break.

I don’t want to cook, but I want to eat something delicious and warm.

Despite such contradictory demands, it can be made possible with a certain item.

The answer is the Magic Bag.

I moved to the shade of a tree overlooking the lake, and I inserted my hand into the Magic Bag.

What I took out was a bento. Yes, Bandel-san cooked some dishes for me with the mushrooms I handed over last time.

I must confess that I don’t know what’s inside. I wonder what kind of mushroom dishes he cooked?

Untying the cloth, a circular bento was unveiled. It looked like a large steamer. Moreover, it’s quite heavy, as if packed to the brim with food.

Feeling excited, I opened the lid and mushrooms greeted me. At first sight, I thought it was gratin, but I was wrong.

Looking carefully, it was divided into slices, and there is pie dough below.

“It’s a mushroom quiche!”

If I’m correct, this is a French dish, in which eggs, fresh cream, minced meat, vegetables, etc. are added to a pie crust, topped with cheese and baked in the oven.

I remember that my mother made it a while back. She called it ‘fashionable baked eggs’. Now, whenever I think about egg dishes, I still feel a bit doubtful.

Well, nevermind that, let’s dig into the quiche in front of me.

The quiche had already been cut into pieces and was firm enough, so I just grabbed it by hand and put it into my mouth.

Ah, the taste of sour cream, mushrooms, and bacon is a perfect match.

The characteristic scent and texture of the mushrooms are especially noticeable; it tasted deliciously chewy.

The body of the mushroom was soft, and the leg parts had a stronger aroma and were crisper.

“…….Delicious.”

A simple word quietly leaked out naturally.

It’s not a flashy taste, but it reminds me of homemade food which makes me feel relieved.

Bandel-san, you did a great job. I was correct to give my ingredients to a professional chef.

The mushroom quiche eaten while I was gazing at the lake was very delicious. Somehow, it feels really nostalgic.

Chapter 27: Searching for Kikyou Flowers

The next day after receiving the request from Claus.

Immediately, I headed towards the Eastern forest to search for the requested materials.

As usual, I used Detection with magic stones as the keyword and proceeded on a safe route far away from monsters.

According to the information provided by Claus, it seems that Yamadokoro, Kikyou flowers, and Kurtz fruits can be found in this forest.

I took out the memo I jotted down yesterday and confirmed the information I have on the materials.

The material called Yamadokoro is a root that grows underground. For me, the illustration in the encyclopedia made me think of it as burdock that branched out like a fork.

Since its roots meander, it is necessary to dig carefully to remove it from the ground.

It seems that it grows naturally in locations where the soil contains a lot of moisture. In this forest specifically, it has been discovered to be growing near the lake.

The Kikyou flower is a light blue flower with petals that resembles the Cosmos flower.

Normally, it will have four petals, but ones with three petals can grow rarely.

And, somehow, it seems that the ones with three petals are more effective to be used as medicine.

Since it grows naturally over a wide area like Mint leaves, it is not difficult to find.

However, it seems that’s not the case for the ones with three petals.

According to Claus, sunny places tend to have more of the three-petal variety.

Lastly, the Kurtz fruit.

It is a small round purple fruit that can swell up greatly when magic power is poured in.

It can absorb a considerable amount of magic power, and it can enlarge to as big as a human face.

It grows naturally in shady areas and seems to be located deep inside the forest, where many monsters reside.

From the above information, let’s search for the commonly found Kikyou flowers first, then Yamadokoro, since I know the specific location of the lake where it grows next to. Finally, I should dive deep into the forest to collect the Kurtz fruits.

After deciding my order of actions, I started my search for Kikyou flowers.

“Kikyou, Detection.”

Since I have seen its illustrations in the encyclopedia, maybe Detection would work.

Having such expectations, I operated Detection, but no material was displayed in my view.

Keeping my hopes up, I tried again outside the previous range and repeated the spell.

However, the result was the same and I could not find any Kikyou flowers.

In the end, it seems to be useless without actually seeing the material with my own eyes. There’s a possibility that there are no Kikyou flowers within range, but if my hypothesis is correct, then it’s impossible to find any using Detection.

Let’s give up using ‘Kikyou’ as the keyword and just use Detection.

Then, materials with colours such as purple, blue, and red were displayed within my sight.

Ah, so many materials I’ve never seen before and yet….! As if seeing a mountain of treasure, I get so excited and I want to appraise and collect everything on impulse, but I have to be patient.

Since my goal today is to collect the requested materials after all.

I shook my head as if to shake off the temptation.

Among the displayed materials, I looked for flowers that are shaped like cosmos.

I compared the silhouettes displayed one by one with the illustrations I had in my memo, and I discovered certain purple-coloured flowers behind the bushes.

When I approached the bush, I saw many light blue flowers blooming among the trees.

【Kikyou】

Flowers that grow naturally in a wide area. Wash it, dry it in the sun, boil and drink it to help with stomachaches, and promote appetite.

There are four-petal and three-petal varieties. The three-petal ones have stronger medicinal properties and the effect is shown more quickly.

Using Appraisal, it seemed that I’ve found it already.

This place is still inside the range where I used Detection earlier. The fact that it did not react to that meant that I can’t use Detection with materials I haven’t seen the real thing before.

Regretfully, my hope of just looking at pictures to use Detection is gone now.

Well, this means that I can enjoy finding it with my own two feet. I’m not that disappointed.

“Now, I only need to find the three-petal ones from all of these–oh?”

About to search for the three-petal one, I suddenly saw a blue-coloured material amongst the cluster of purple ones. I wonder if other materials are mixed in, but probably not.

Reflexively picking it up, it turned out to be a flower with three petals.

“N-no way…. I found it so quickly….”

The rare three-petals Kikyou. I was secretly looking forward to the act of searching for that single item from a myriad of things, like searching for four-leaf clovers when I was young.

To think that it would be this easy to find….

I feel like I’m having a nervous breakdown.

…..What is it? It felt like the heart of the excited boy inside me was cooling down all of the sudden.

“That didn’t count! I won’t use Detection and find it with my own eyes!”

I was careful to cover my eyes with both hands and stopped using Detection.

Then, when I gently opened my eyes, I no longer saw any outlined materials.

“Yoshi yoshi! With this, I can search with my own eyes!”

Without Detection, it is now a fair game.

Feeling my tension rising again, I resumed my search for three-petals Kikyou.

“Four-petal, four-petal, four-petal, four-petal…..ah! Three-petal! Nope, a petal fell off ….”

It is difficult to find three-petal ones out of this many flowers.

Either a petal was hidden, or was torn off. It might be ridiculous for me to be happy and disappointed over the number of petals.

However, it was nostalgic and fun and made me reminiscent of my childhood, to be focused on only one thing while crawling on all fours like this again.

“Found it! A three-petal one!”

Finally, after counting the number of petals endlessly, I found one with three petals.

A perfect flower with three petals, with no overlapping petals or small petals growing on the side.

I think it took a little over an hour to find just one.

However, since I was able to find it with my own eyes, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment.

“Well, let’s get back to work.”

If I continue at this pace, I will need half a day to reach my Kikyou quota.

I might collect it myself leisurely if it was a normal request, but it’s a nominated request this time.

Let’s finish early so the impatient Claus won’t have any complaints.

“Detection.”

With Detection, I could see many purple-coloured Kikyou, however, here and there were ones in blue.

Picking one up, as I thought, it had three petals.

It took me about an hour to search for one manually, but I was able to collect 5 three-petal Kikyou in less than 10 seconds with Detection.

Comparing them like this, Detection is clearly foul play.

I once again give my thanks to the awesomeness of Detection.

Chapter 26: Request from Doctor Claus

As I proceeded by relying on the detailed map drawn behind the request form, I arrived at a small drugstore.

It seems that a person called Claus, the client this time, is here.

The request only had “I would like to request for materials collection. For details, meet directly to talk.” written on it.

I don’t think he will be very friendly.

I hope he’s not a strange person, and I knocked on the door.

I tried waiting for a while, but there was no reply from inside. Maybe he’s away?

“Excuse me, I’m from the Adventurer’s Guild, did you make a request?”

“I’m busy right now. Just enter.”

Just in case, I called out from outside. Then, I heard the muffled voice of a man from inside the house.

“Just enter.”…….. Well, that’s what the client said, so let’s just go in.

“Excuse my intrusion.”

After that, the wooden door creaked as I pushed it open.

Upon entrance, the scent of medicinal herbs overwhelmed me. It may not be regarded as smelling great for the general public, but it strangely resembles the gentle smell of my grandma’s house.

On the counters and tables, some bottles filled with medicinal herbs and some with various shades of green liquid were left around. Maybe they are herbs or kinds of medicine.

Looking above, a rope is strung across the room with lots of dried herbs, mushrooms, and even creatures on it. If they are stored here, they are all probably materials to make medicine.

Ooh, full of materials I don’t know about. How fun to be able to see strange materials.

“…..Oi, adventurer. What are you doing?”

While looking at the materials in the room and using Appraisal, I was suddenly called out.

Looking behind me, a silver-haired man with glasses stood there with a shocked expression.

Apparently, I had stared at the materials for so long that his task was already over.

“Oh, sorry. I was looking at the materials.”

“For you who’s not a doctor, what’s the fun in seeing the materials in here?”

“It’s fun just looking at materials after all.”

“I heard that you were an adventurer who accepted only collection requests, but you’re even stranger than I imagined.”

I don’t want to hear that from someone who allowed a stranger to enter their shop without even seeing his face.

“I’m Claus, a doctor in this town. You’re Shuu, an adventurer, correct?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“I will tell you the details. Follow me.”

After confirming the necessary facts, the client, who I now know is named Claus, walked to the back.

Un, he seems to be the crazy scientist type. I know that this type wants things done smoothly, so I quickly followed.

Following Claus, I was guided to a small room in the back.

There were a table and a sofa, and books and documents were placed around the room as if to surround the space.

“I’ll prepare some tea. Sit here patiently.”

Claus said and left the room.

“Sit here patiently.” meant be still and don’t touch anything.

He speaks with a bit of arrogance, but I don’t think he’s a bad person.

While I was looking around, Claus came back with a tea set.

“It’s medicinal tea.”

The tea was clear and had a colour that looked like Japanese green tea.

It had a faint scent of medicinal herbs and a calming scent.

I picked up the teacup and downed a gulp.

“…..Bitter.”

Since it smelled great, I was expecting a mellow taste, but it was bitter than I expected. Unintentionally, I leaked out a grumble.

“Since I just brewed some medicinal herbs after all.”

Claus, who also drank it, said so matter-of-factly. He seemed used to it and was perfectly okay.

Although it seemed healthy, I think it’s better to serve your guests something easier to drink.

It’s not so bitter that I can’t drink it, but it’s a bit harsh to drink as it is.

I know. It may become easier to drink if I added some Crescenka Nectar.

I took out the bottle containing Crescenka Nectar from my Magic Bag and put nectar in the tea.

Mix well with a spoon and try again.

Then, with the sweetness of the nectar combined, the medicinal tea became very easy to drink. The taste and flavor particular to medicinal herbs have been softened and it has become mild. Yeah, I can drink it like this.

“Crescenka Nectar, huh? You have a good item there.”

“I recently harvested it in the forest and I like it.

After replying, Claus frowned for some reason.

Did I say something that would make Claus uncomfortable in the current conversation?

“…..You have a good item there.”

As I tilted my head in confusion, Claus repeated to make his point.

“If you’d like, do you want some, Claus-san?”

“Since you offered, I’ll take some.”

When I recommended it to Claus, he was satisfied and took some nectar.

Apparently, his sentence just now meant, “Give me some too.” Your wording was too hard to understand!

“Ho, this is quite easy to drink.”

“Above anything else, I am glad it fits your tastes.”

Claus, with a less stern expression, seemed to like the nectar.

He gazed a bit longingly at my bottle of nectar, but I can’t give it to him because this is my last bottle.

“It may be a bit sudden, but can I ask you for the details of the request now?”

“Ah, I want you to collect ingredients needed to make medicine.”

Claus said, and took out a book from the bookshelf and spread it on the table.

Various materials were listed. Names and effects of medicinal herbs, monsters, mushrooms, tree roots, and materials used for medicine were carefully written down by hand.

I would like to take a closer look at the encyclopedia, but Claus flipped through the pages without minding me.

“The first is Yamadokoro, a root that grows underground.”

Claus pointed to a carefully drawn image of the so-called Yamadokoro.

“You have to be careful not to damage the material when collecting and make sure to remove the fine roots properly. Otherwise, the necessary components for medicine will be lost.”

Even since the start, there are a lot of things to beware of. This kind of detail can’t be written on the request form. It makes sense to go out of his way to request a face-to-face meeting.

“The second is a flower, Kikyou, and I want you to collect the ones that have three petals. The normal one has four petals, but those are not suitable and I won’t accept them.”

Claus folded his arms and firmly stated so.

The illustration showed clusters of flowers growing close to another, so it would be fine to collect only the ones with three petals from amongst them.

It feels like searching for a four-leaf clover.

“And, finally, Kurtz fruit. This fruit will swell if you pour in magic power and the quality will improve. I want you to collect ones with magic power contained as much as possible.”

The encyclopedia depicted a small, purple fruit compared to a greatly swollen one. It is a fruit that swelled up after magic power was absorbed.

The harvesting method seemed to be easier compared to the previous materials, but I’m worried whether it will burst like the adventurer plate or not if I pour in too much magic power.

“About Kurtz fruit, the magic power contained inside will dissipate over time, so it’s best to collect it at the end and return immediately.”

Hmm, so the contained magic power will gradually dissipate. But I have a Magic Bag. Since materials inside do not deteriorate, there’s no problem with time concerns.

“That concludes my request. Materials that do not meet these conditions will not be accepted or paid for even if you bring them back.”

“Understood.”

“Other adventurers dislike my requests a lot. You don’t agree with them?”

Others may think so, but to me, I was being simply informed about the collection methods.

Rather, the fact that these materials require such specific collection methods makes it more fun.

“Well, these are necessary to make medicine, right?”

“Ah, yes. But many adventurers go out and bring some back carelessly. Since these are used to make medicine, I can’t possibly use poor quality materials.”

Claus held his temple while exhaling, perhaps he was recalling his experiences with adventurers in the past.

Claus is simply making a necessary request to do his job properly. It’s not as if he’s intentionally making trouble for us adventurers.

After listening to a tirade of complaints for a while, Clause realized and came to his senses.

“Sorry. My troubles have nothing to do with you. For the time being, I want three Yamadokoro, seven Kikyou flowers, and about ten Kurtz fruits. How about four gold coins as the reward?”

“The reward is that high?”

“Every single material is difficult to harvest. It’s a reasonable price.”

For ordinary collection requests, except the high difficulty requests, mostly reward bronze or silver coins.

Even for a request to deliver three types of materials, it is an exceptional reward for F-rank adventurers.

I feel like I can understand why Rabis recommends nominated requests now.

“Do you have any questions?”

“Do you have any real examples? If so, I can use them as reference……”

Not actually as a reference, you know. If I can see the real thing, I can use Detection and find it immediately. I’d be happy if that were the case.

“Unfortunately, not a single one is left. That’s why I’m making a request.”

I wondered if there was one in stock, but it didn’t go so well.

“Then, can I borrow this encyclopedia?”

Inside, the locations of the materials are drawn in detail, and the collection method is also written.

If I could search while looking at it, it would be much easier.

“No. It’s a book full of valuable information. I can’t afford for it to be damaged or lost.”

Well, that’s obvious. I don’t think many people would lend a precious encyclopedia to someone you meet for the first time.

“In that case, can I note down the locations at least? Since I didn’t know about these materials, that would help a lot.”

“……I’ll allow notes on what I told you orally.”

“Thank you.”

I took out a memo and a pen from my Magic Bag and noted down the habitats and environments of the materials Claus told me.

“So, you’re settled? When will you go harvesting?”

“It’s past noon today, so I’ll go collecting tomorrow morning.”

“Okay. Once you get the materials, bring them to me. I have to process them immediately.”

And that was how I received my first nominated request.

Chapter 25: Nominated Request

In the forest located in the east of Grantel.

Today as well, I accepted collection requests from the Adventurer’s Guild and came to collect the materials.

“Alright! I found Azami Herb!”

I found Azami Herbs using Detection and pulled them out by the roots one after another.

Azami Herbs are common collection requests.

Since it can be used as a salve or as a material for Low Potions, demand for it is stable. It is one of the materials that supports my life.

I collected a bit more than I needed and put them in the Magic Bag.

With this, I completed the Azami Herb collection request.

Next, let’s move on to the next request I took. It’s a capture request for a bug called Light Bugs.

“Light Bug, Detection!”

When I activated the Detection, I saw an insect outlined in purple within my field of sight.

I’ve never caught a Light Bug yet, but I saw some being sold as raw materials in the market, so I knew what the real thing looked like.

Due to that, it seems that Detection worked even with materials that I did not have.

The condition for Detection to work should be needing to see the material directly with my own eyes once.

Feeling happy to discover another fact about Detection, I moved towards the location of the Light Bug.

Looking through a bush, I saw a golden beetle-like creature clinging to a tree.

【Light Bug】

When a foreign enemy approaches, it instantly emits the light accumulated in its body.

The light-emitting organs in its body can be used for items such as light bulbs, flash bombing magic tools, and lighting equipment. There is a high demand from alchemists. Relatively docile while absorbing light.

When I tried using Appraisal, there was no doubt that it was the Light Bug.

It would emit a blinding light mercilessly when approached by a foreign enemy.

According to the request this time, the client wanted the Light Bugs to be delivered alive.

They also prohibited the use of anesthetics.

I don’t know the reason, but the client wants it, so I have no choice but to obey it.

In any case, I don’t want a repeat of having a Light Ball exploding in my face again.

I would feel uneasy all day. Can it be avoided somehow?

Can I block the light with a blindfold? Or do I have to keep my eyes shut and catch it with a net?

I feel like catching a small insect while blindfolded is not a smart idea.

It could fly away while my eyes are shut.

Re-read what Appraisal-sensei told me and consider other methods.

……Hmm, it’s docile while it’s absorbing light? Does that mean it won’t escape while absorbing light? Like how it’s stuck to the tree absorbing the sunlight right now?

Even if Appraisal said “light, but the area where the Light Bug is at is inside the shade of the tree. There is no sign of any sunlight.

Since natural light is impossible, I have no choice but to use artificial light.

Thinking so, I recalled the failed Null Attribute spell I used back in Ferumi Village.

“If I use the light from Light Ball on it, maybe I can catch it easily.”

I’m not sure, but it’s worth a try.

The problem was that I’m not sure if the spell would burn my retina again or not.

It doesn’t make sense to have a plan for catching Light Bugs if I fail with my magic in the first place.

Recently, I’ve been practicing a lot in the room at the inn… should I try?

Yosh, if I am scared and don’t try, I won’t grow.

Yup, let’s create a Light Ball that is approximately the same size as the Light Bug in front of me.

“Light Ball!”

I activated Light Ball while looking at the Light Bug in front of me.

Then, a small ball of light about the same size as the Light Bug appeared.

Due to my strong magic power, it emitted a more dazzling light than I imagined, but it was fortunately not strong enough to burn my eyes.

I controlled the Light Ball and moved it next to the Light Bug.

Then, the Light Bug responded to the Light Ball and moved closer to the light source to absorb it.

……Is this its light-absorbing state?

I took out a bottle used for capturing bugs out of my Magic Bag and approached it.

While making sure the Light Ball’s light was steady, I slowly extended my hand towards the bug.

Then, the Light Bug was quietly captured without flashing any light.

However, I didn’t know what kind of stimulus it would endure before emitting light, so I put it in the bottle immediately.

Since it is a living thing, I cannot put it in the Magic Bag. Therefore, I put the bottle in a hemp bag.

Then, a bright light leaked out from the hemp bag.

Maybe the Light Bug finally radiated light. It was dangerous.

However, I’ve found a method to capture the bugs without damaging my eyes.

Let’s capture Light Bugs using this method.

“I’ve confirmed the delivery of Azami Herbs and Light Bugs. The requests Shuu-san accepted are now marked as completed.”

After I returning to the Guild and delivering the materials, Rabis stamped the completed mark on my request papers with a smile.

“As expected of Shuu-san. These are also of high quality again. I don’t get to see Light Bugs with such a brilliant luster of light often!

“Really? I’m glad I delivered materials that Rabis-san approved.”

Because I was appraised with such dreadful eyes on the first day after all. As I am under Rabis-san’s jurisdiction, I can’t hand over half-baked materials.

Well, I wouldn’t deliver poor quality products anyway, even as a material collector myself.

In any case, her attitude seems to be milder compared to when I first came here.

At first, she looked at me as if she were looking at a bad child.

“Since you’ve completed successive collection requests and delivered high quality materials, Shuu-san’s evaluation is skyrocketing. Thanks to that, we have a nominated request specifically for you today!”

“Nominated request?”

“If you receive a high enough rating as an adventurer, clients can request you by name. The rewards are higher than ordinary requests, and if you get along with the client, you can get requests from them regularly, so it’s really lucrative!”

Rabies-san explains quite excitedly.

She’s adorable when her long ears are twitching like that.

“I see, what kind of request came?”

If the reward is better than ordinary requests, there is no reason to decline.

“Hmm, it’s a collection request, but the client stated that they want to meet in person and explain the details.”

“….Nominated requests require going out to meet clients like this?”

“In the cases where there are a lot of details regarding the requested materials, adventurers would often need to meet up with the clients for briefing first.”

If you collect the materials using the wrong methods, the quality can deteriorate and it will not be useful.

It may be difficult to convey just through text.

“Okay, I’ll accept this collection request, but when should I go visit the client?”

“The client said that whenever is fine, so I think even now is okay, but if not, then tomorrow.”

That’s quite a vague time slot. I wonder if this is the case in a world where direct communication is not easy.

“Since I completed my requests early, I’ll go now.”

“Understood. Please bring this request form with you. As for the address, it is written on the back.”

Accepting the parchment from Rabis-san, I turned the paper over and saw a simple route from the Adventurer’s Guild to the client’s home drawn on it.

The client seems to be a detailed person since small but specific markings were drawn delicately on the map.

Well, I’m still not familiar with the geography of the city, so the more detailed it is the better.

“Then, I’m off.”

“Yes, have a safe trip.”

Holding the request form within my hand, I departed from the Adventurer’s Guild.

Chapter 24: A Deal

After handling the request easily, I received the reward and decided to return to Cat’s Tail Pavilion.

Inside the Adventurer’s Guild’s tavern, maybe because it was dinnertime, but many adventurers were in high spirits and ate while making a lot of noise. However as I was just registered, I had no acquaintances and it was too difficult for me to sit there.

Plus, I’m staying at an inn with meals included in my fee.

For a while, it would be a good idea to dine at the inn while getting accustomed to this town.

That’s why I obediently returned to my current base: the Cat’s Tail Pavilion.

Back at Cat’s Tail Pavilion, there were many customers already on the first floor, and lively voices and the warm light of the magic tools were leaking out.

Many human men were sitting at the tables and cute beastmen waitresses were weaving around swiftly between the gaps. Their tails and ears that are swaying elegantly are beautiful.

It had an image of a huge dining hall during the day, but at night it could also become such a lively bar.

“Nyaa! Shuu, welcome back nya!”

While I was surprised at the contrast of the inn during the day and night, Mia, who was now doing rounds as a waitress, greeted me.

Since there were so many customers, I thought that I wouldn’t receive a friendly greeting like back in Ferumi village, but it seems that I was wrong.

“I’m back.”

“You told me you were going to register as an adventurer today, right? How did it go nya?”

“I accepted three collection requests and received the reward without any problems.”

“Nya! Doesn’t that mean you’re loaded today?”

Mia, eyes sparkling with high expectations, stared at me like a hungry cat.

“Dammit! You came over to welcome me just to check my income, didn’t you?

“Nyahaha, we have delicious fish today. If you add in some bronze coins, your dinner will become more wonderful, you know?”

Gununu, in the end, her goal was to squeeze the cash out of my pockets.

“That’s what I wanted to say. However, since this is your first day as an adventurer, we’ll throw it in for free as service to celebrate your successful request!”

“Ooh, is that okay?”

“In exchange, stop it with polite words. Somehow, I’m getting tired just by listening to you.”

“Ahaha, got it. Well, from now on, I’ll talk like this.”

“Great, let’s find you a seat!”

After speaking informally, Mia who was satisfied, smiled and guided me to the counter seat.

“Ooh, you’re the adventurer Mia was talking ‘bout?”

What greeted me was an apron-clad muscular body and pointed eyes. Looking further up, I saw a pair of lovely rounded bear ears.

That’s right. Beastmen didn’t consist of only women. The men also sported tails and ears.

“…Are you listening?”

“Eh-Yes. My name is Shuu!”

I promised Mia not to use formal speech with her, but I had no courage to speak like that to this person.

“I see. I’m the head chef here, Bandel. Today is a day worth celebrating for you. Eat this and work hard tomorrow as well.”

Saying so, Bandel-san put down the dishes one after another on the table.

A sizzling steak atop a hot plate garnished with colourful salad.

And the first thing to draw my attention is the big, steamed fish on the platter.

It has four eyes and a large horn growing from its forehead.

“……This, what is this?”

“Steamed Egrazzo. It’s delicious, ya know?.”

I asked him in amazement, and Bandel-san answered with a tinge of boasting.

It’s ridiculously big and scary, but it seems to be a proper fish dish.

It’s enough to fill my stomach with just one dish.

In any case, this is the courtesy of both Mia and Bandel-san. I won’t reject their goodwill.

Immediately, let’s relax and eat the recommended dish, Egrazzo.

“Oh, it’s delicious!”

The fat on the meat is soft and melts in your mouth. Unimaginable from its ferocious appearance, it is light and delicious, fitting for a white-fleshed fish. [1]

And, thanks to the soup stock and the herbs used to supplement the taste of this fish, there was no odor, and the umami taste was further enhanced.

“Hehe, who do you think made it?”

Bandel-san looked at my reaction and laughed proudly.

He, in the same way as Egrazzo fish, looked stern but was a person capable of bringing out such a delicate taste from ingredients. I’m really happy that I can eat such delicious food here.

Eat the steamed Egrazzo, then cut the steak on the iron plate with a knife and take a bite.

This meat is also thick, but it’s softer than I thought when I chewed down.

The juicy gravy oozes out, giving me a strong taste of wild meat. It’s a dish that leaves an impact on you when eaten with its accompanying spicy-sweet sauce.

Even so, I’ve never had meat that tasted like this before. It tastes like a mix between pork and beef.

“What kind of meat is this steak made from?”

“Have you never eaten it? It’s Orc meat.”

Orc? That’s the bipedal monster with the face of a pig right? It’s a monster you know well from games. I see, so it’s edible.

Even if you acknowledge that it is Orc meat, the taste of the steak inside my mouth will not change.

Yeah, it’s okay if they’re delicious. Applies to both monsters and animals.

Not only delicate dishes, but powerful dishes like this can also be cooked by him.

Bandel-san’s cooking repertoire seems to be quite wide.

If that is the case, he may be able to skilfully cook the ingredients I collected during my requests.

“Bandel-san, if I give you some materials I collected, will you be able to cook them for me?

“…..Ho, now that’s interesting. I want to accept it, but I have two conditions.”

“Let’s hear it.”

“The first is that the ingredients are of proper quality. As long as they are being served as food at this restaurant, I won’t use them if they’re not of good quality.”

“Since it’s a restaurant, that’s natural. I won’t hand over any poor quality ingredients definitely, even if it’s for myself.”

Bandel-san looked impressed with my answer.

Someone is going out of their way to cook for me. I can’t let them cook with poor quality ingredients.

“The second thing is that if you get the ingredients I want, wholesale them a little cheaper than the market price. Well, I don’t know how much skill you have since you just registered. Plus, getting edible ingredients can be difficult.”

“Okay. Please tell me anytime if you have any ingredients you want.”

“Oh, I’ll ask when the time comes. By the way, since you said you want to give me your ingredients for me to cook, did you get any good ingredients this time?”

As a cook, he is naturally interested in acquiring ingredients. Bandel-san leaned forward and asked.

“Yes, I got a lot of Walking Mushrooms today and a little of Crescenka Nectar. Both can be eaten deliciously, and I think if Bandel-san cooks with them, it will be even more delicious.”

“Show me a bit.”

When I listed the materials I collected today, Bandel-san requested in a serious tone.

A bit scared at the look on his face, I placed down 20 Walking Mushrooms and a bottle of Crescenka Nectar from the Magic Bag on the counter.

Then, Bandel-san picked each one of the materials up and examined them.

“…Ho, it looks like it was cut right away. And the bitterness isn’t mixed inside the Crescenka Nectar. All are of high quality.”

“Does Bandel-san also have the Appraisal skill?”

“Stupid. Even if you don’t have that, you can judge with your eyes.”

I see, certainly, that is also the case. I have to be able to understand the quality of the material at a glance as well.

Even if I have no problems as I have Appraisal, but as a person who collects materials, it is uncool to rely on it forever.

“Okay, I’ll serve you a dish made from Walking Mushrooms next time.”

“Oh, thank you very much.”

Apparently, my material was deemed suitable by Bandel-san’s standards.

Bandel-san took about ten mushrooms, so I put the rest of the ingredients inside the Magic Bag. However, my hand was stopped by Mr. Bandell’s big hand.

“W-what is it?”

“Wait. I want you to sell me the Crescenka Nectar.”

I wonder if he likes honey and nectar because he is a bear. I thought of that while an image of a certain yellow bear appeared in my head.

Chapter 23: The Newcomer with High Expectations

“The request to subjugate Needle Turtles has been accepted. Have a good day and take care.”

When I sent off the departing adventurer with a smile, my colleague Katie came over.

“Hey, the newcomer you were talking to just now was interesting.”

Katie says so while her voice indicated that it was amusing.

When Katie hears such interesting stories and rumors, she often comes to talk about them to kill time.

Since the receptionist of the Guild has to serve customers with a smile all the time, these kinds of breaks are essential.

There are no adventurers at the counter right now too.

The newcomer she mentioned is the adventurer Shuu, who I completed the registrations for.

“Maybe it’s amusing for you, but it was difficult for me.”

“Well, I understand. A newcomer who suddenly tried to receive a higher-ranked request, which he couldn’t’, so he received 3 requests instead.”

She listened to my conversation down to the syllables, didn’t she? This Katie.

According to the rules, adventurers can receive a request one rank higher than their given rank. However, in reality, it is a challenge adventurers can accept after completing requests for a while.

Having no track record, it was not something that an F-ranked adventurer who just registered could do. I could not overlook it as a Guild staff either.

At first glance, the request for collection looks simple, but it is not.

First of all, it takes time to find materials in the vast forest.

To find materials quickly, one needs to understand its characteristics and search for it at its harvesting grounds. However, he said that he has never seen Walking Mushrooms or Crescenka Flowers before.

He knew about Mint Leaves, but I doubt whether he can find all three types of materials without the proper knowledge.

“As for me, I’m more curious about how he broke the plate.”

Remembering the antics of the newcomer, I had to message my temple. Then, another one of my colleagues, Shreddy, came into the conversation.

Since she, an Elf, doesn’t like to chitchat, she rarely enters such conversations.

For her, the fact that an adventurer named Shuu broke the plate seems to be interesting.

“You’re right! I’ve never seen a plate break.”

“But, wasn’t that because the plate was defective?”

The plate was made from magic stones that had magic absorption abilities. There must be something wrong with the plate, as it can’t be destroyed by inputting magic power.

“I’ve been working as a staff member for a long time, but I have never seen such a defect.”

“Eh? By long, how long do――no, it’s nothing.”

Katie tried to ask something unnecessary, but she shut her mouth after receiving a chilled look from Shreddy.

I was also a bit interested, but I didn’t ask because I still value my life.

“Then why did it break?”

“……Maybe, the plate wasn’t able to contain all the magic that was poured in, I think….”

“Does the plate break if you use too much magic?”

“Yes, that happened once in the past when an Imperial Court magician registered as an adventurer.”

I don’t think any Imperial Court magicians have registered as an adventurer for the past few decades.

I can somehow guess how long Shreddy has been working for the Guild, but I don’t go into it.

Katie made a surprised voice, but she immediately slammed her mouth shut and said nothing.

“I’ve never heard that the plate can break if too much magic is poured in.”

“At the very least, It’s impossible if you don’t have enough magic power to overwhelm the limit of the plate.

“Then Shuu has the same amount of magic power as an Imperial Court magician?”

“If my guess is correct, then that will be the case.”

If you have the same amount of magic power as an Imperial Court magician, normally you would be hired as a mage of the royal family or by noblemen.

I wonder why such a person came to register at the Adventurer’s Guild and received collection requests.

“He wrote his hometown as Ferumi Village, but it’s a rural area with nothing there, right?”

Pulling out Shuu’s registration form, Katie tilted her head.

Was it a place that could raise a person with enormous magic power?

“It is taboo to dig any further than what is written on the registration form.”

“Well, yeah.”

It is taboo to ask about an adventurer’s past and origin. It’s not something you will ask about unless the person tells you voluntarily.

“But Rabis is pretty mean too. To recommend a newcomer to collect Crescenka Nectar.”

“If you collect Crescenka Nectar using the wrong method, the bitterness will be mixed in and you will not be able to sell it.”

“I didn’t intentionally recommend it, you know? It was him who said he will accept all the requests.”

Well, indeed, I didn’t teach him how to collect the nectar properly. However, I think it’s for his own sake if he can learn from his own painful mistakes.

It’s unthinkable of me to purposefully recommend a difficult request to anyone just to trouble them.

“Well, I hope he can come back safely in any case.”

I agree with Shreddy. If he can return home safely, he will improve based on his failures.

Even if you tell me to separate work from private life, it’s sad to know if an adventurer I was in charge of passes away.

“Oh, Rabis! The new adventurer is back!”

Katie banged on my shoulder and said so while I was doing paperwork at the reception.

When I raised my face, the newcomer entered from the entrance of the Guild.

For the time being, I was relieved when I saw him physically intact.

However, it’s still just a bit past noon. No matter how you think about it, it’s impossible to have completed collecting all the materials.

I have to scold him a little for not listening to my advice.

He looked indirectly at me and shifted towards Katie.

Usually, it’s logical to come report to the staff who accepted your request? It’s not crowded either.

“Welcome back, Shuu-san.”

I put on a business smile and pressured him to come over this way.

“I’m back, Rabis-san.”

“You are back sooner than I expected. What about your requests?”

“I have collected all of them.”

“Eh?”

I was bewildered from the completely unexpected response.

“Can I put it out here?”

“Ye-yes, please.”

When I urged him, he pulled out jars filled with Mint Leaves, Walking Mushrooms, and bottles filled with Crescenka Nectar from his shoulder bag onto the reception counter.

Eh? Really? ――Did he collect three kinds of materials in just half a day?

Still shell-shocked, I examined all three types of materials and judged that they were all undeniably correct.

But, I can’t let my guard down yet. Quality is important for Crescenka Nectar

If you harvested it the wrong way, we won’t accept it due to the bitterness mixed in.

“I will now use Appraisal on your materials, do you consent?”

“Rabis-san can also use Appraisal?”

“Yes, it is the responsibility of the Guild staff to check the quality of the material after all.”

“I don’t mind then, please go ahead.”

Since I received permission from the adventurer, I activated Appraisal to confirm the quality of the Crescenka Nectar.

Then, in my Appraisal, it was displayed as high quality.

Therefore, it can be said that this Crescenka Nectar was collected by the correct method.

He didn’t know about the material, but knew the correct collection method?

Did he research before going out? No, but if he did so, there’s no way he could return so quickly….

When I also tried using Appraisal on the Mint Leaves and Walking Mushrooms, I found that they were also of high quality.

Mint Leaves must be properly cut from the root with a knife, and the mushrooms must be caught and cut immediately.

“Um, how was the quality?”

“….All of them were collected correctly and the quality is high, so all three of Shuu-san’s requests have been completed.”

“Oh, that’s great.”

Shuu-san, the newcomer adventurer, stood there with a relaxed smile floating on his face.

Despite his humble attitude, he seems quite confident in the quality of his materials.

Maybe he’s an expert who has been harvesting in other locations and just didn’t know about the materials in this area. He may also have the same Appraisal skill as me.

At Grantel, there are only a few adventurers who are knowledgeable about materials. Currently, only requests for subjugation are completed, and the acceptance rate for collection requests is poor.

Shuu-san, who can deliver high-quality materials instantly, may become a precious contributor for the Guild.

As the staff member in charge, I have to watch over him closely.

“Then, I will give you the reward now.”

Holding high expectations for him in the future within my chest, I proceeded to complete the process for his reward money.
