Chapter 23: The Newcomer with High Expectations

“The request to subjugate Needle Turtles has been accepted. Have a good day and take care.”

When I sent off the departing adventurer with a smile, my colleague Katie came over.

“Hey, the newcomer you were talking to just now was interesting.”

Katie says so while her voice indicated that it was amusing.

When Katie hears such interesting stories and rumors, she often comes to talk about them to kill time.

Since the receptionist of the Guild has to serve customers with a smile all the time, these kinds of breaks are essential.

There are no adventurers at the counter right now too.

The newcomer she mentioned is the adventurer Shuu, who I completed the registrations for.

“Maybe it’s amusing for you, but it was difficult for me.”

“Well, I understand. A newcomer who suddenly tried to receive a higher-ranked request, which he couldn’t’, so he received 3 requests instead.”

She listened to my conversation down to the syllables, didn’t she? This Katie.

According to the rules, adventurers can receive a request one rank higher than their given rank. However, in reality, it is a challenge adventurers can accept after completing requests for a while.

Having no track record, it was not something that an F-ranked adventurer who just registered could do. I could not overlook it as a Guild staff either.

At first glance, the request for collection looks simple, but it is not.

First of all, it takes time to find materials in the vast forest.

To find materials quickly, one needs to understand its characteristics and search for it at its harvesting grounds. However, he said that he has never seen Walking Mushrooms or Crescenka Flowers before.

He knew about Mint Leaves, but I doubt whether he can find all three types of materials without the proper knowledge.

“As for me, I’m more curious about how he broke the plate.”

Remembering the antics of the newcomer, I had to message my temple. Then, another one of my colleagues, Shreddy, came into the conversation.

Since she, an Elf, doesn’t like to chitchat, she rarely enters such conversations.

For her, the fact that an adventurer named Shuu broke the plate seems to be interesting.

“You’re right! I’ve never seen a plate break.”

“But, wasn’t that because the plate was defective?”

The plate was made from magic stones that had magic absorption abilities. There must be something wrong with the plate, as it can’t be destroyed by inputting magic power.

“I’ve been working as a staff member for a long time, but I have never seen such a defect.”

“Eh? By long, how long do――no, it’s nothing.”

Katie tried to ask something unnecessary, but she shut her mouth after receiving a chilled look from Shreddy.

I was also a bit interested, but I didn’t ask because I still value my life.

“Then why did it break?”

“……Maybe, the plate wasn’t able to contain all the magic that was poured in, I think….”

“Does the plate break if you use too much magic?”

“Yes, that happened once in the past when an Imperial Court magician registered as an adventurer.”

I don’t think any Imperial Court magicians have registered as an adventurer for the past few decades.

I can somehow guess how long Shreddy has been working for the Guild, but I don’t go into it.

Katie made a surprised voice, but she immediately slammed her mouth shut and said nothing.

“I’ve never heard that the plate can break if too much magic is poured in.”

“At the very least, It’s impossible if you don’t have enough magic power to overwhelm the limit of the plate.

“Then Shuu has the same amount of magic power as an Imperial Court magician?”

“If my guess is correct, then that will be the case.”

If you have the same amount of magic power as an Imperial Court magician, normally you would be hired as a mage of the royal family or by noblemen.

I wonder why such a person came to register at the Adventurer’s Guild and received collection requests.

“He wrote his hometown as Ferumi Village, but it’s a rural area with nothing there, right?”

Pulling out Shuu’s registration form, Katie tilted her head.

Was it a place that could raise a person with enormous magic power?

“It is taboo to dig any further than what is written on the registration form.”

“Well, yeah.”

It is taboo to ask about an adventurer’s past and origin. It’s not something you will ask about unless the person tells you voluntarily.

“But Rabis is pretty mean too. To recommend a newcomer to collect Crescenka Nectar.”

“If you collect Crescenka Nectar using the wrong method, the bitterness will be mixed in and you will not be able to sell it.”

“I didn’t intentionally recommend it, you know? It was him who said he will accept all the requests.”

Well, indeed, I didn’t teach him how to collect the nectar properly. However, I think it’s for his own sake if he can learn from his own painful mistakes.

It’s unthinkable of me to purposefully recommend a difficult request to anyone just to trouble them.

“Well, I hope he can come back safely in any case.”

I agree with Shreddy. If he can return home safely, he will improve based on his failures.

Even if you tell me to separate work from private life, it’s sad to know if an adventurer I was in charge of passes away.

“Oh, Rabis! The new adventurer is back!”

Katie banged on my shoulder and said so while I was doing paperwork at the reception.

When I raised my face, the newcomer entered from the entrance of the Guild.

For the time being, I was relieved when I saw him physically intact.

However, it’s still just a bit past noon. No matter how you think about it, it’s impossible to have completed collecting all the materials.

I have to scold him a little for not listening to my advice.

He looked indirectly at me and shifted towards Katie.

Usually, it’s logical to come report to the staff who accepted your request? It’s not crowded either.

“Welcome back, Shuu-san.”

I put on a business smile and pressured him to come over this way.

“I’m back, Rabis-san.”

“You are back sooner than I expected. What about your requests?”

“I have collected all of them.”

“Eh?”

I was bewildered from the completely unexpected response.

“Can I put it out here?”

“Ye-yes, please.”

When I urged him, he pulled out jars filled with Mint Leaves, Walking Mushrooms, and bottles filled with Crescenka Nectar from his shoulder bag onto the reception counter.

Eh? Really? ――Did he collect three kinds of materials in just half a day?

Still shell-shocked, I examined all three types of materials and judged that they were all undeniably correct.

But, I can’t let my guard down yet. Quality is important for Crescenka Nectar

If you harvested it the wrong way, we won’t accept it due to the bitterness mixed in.

“I will now use Appraisal on your materials, do you consent?”

“Rabis-san can also use Appraisal?”

“Yes, it is the responsibility of the Guild staff to check the quality of the material after all.”

“I don’t mind then, please go ahead.”

Since I received permission from the adventurer, I activated Appraisal to confirm the quality of the Crescenka Nectar.

Then, in my Appraisal, it was displayed as high quality.

Therefore, it can be said that this Crescenka Nectar was collected by the correct method.

He didn’t know about the material, but knew the correct collection method?

Did he research before going out? No, but if he did so, there’s no way he could return so quickly….

When I also tried using Appraisal on the Mint Leaves and Walking Mushrooms, I found that they were also of high quality.

Mint Leaves must be properly cut from the root with a knife, and the mushrooms must be caught and cut immediately.

“Um, how was the quality?”

“….All of them were collected correctly and the quality is high, so all three of Shuu-san’s requests have been completed.”

“Oh, that’s great.”

Shuu-san, the newcomer adventurer, stood there with a relaxed smile floating on his face.

Despite his humble attitude, he seems quite confident in the quality of his materials.

Maybe he’s an expert who has been harvesting in other locations and just didn’t know about the materials in this area. He may also have the same Appraisal skill as me.

At Grantel, there are only a few adventurers who are knowledgeable about materials. Currently, only requests for subjugation are completed, and the acceptance rate for collection requests is poor.

Shuu-san, who can deliver high-quality materials instantly, may become a precious contributor for the Guild.

As the staff member in charge, I have to watch over him closely.

“Then, I will give you the reward now.”

Holding high expectations for him in the future within my chest, I proceeded to complete the process for his reward money.

Chapter 22: Crescenka Nectar

“Oops, I can’t collect what I need if I play around too much.”

Playing with the mysterious creatures that are known as Walking Mushrooms, I realised that the number was gradually decreasing.

Some burrowed into holes at the base of the trees or escaped into the bushes.

Since the number seems to drastically decrease if I continue to play carefreely, I will start collecting now.

I grabbed the mushrooms at my feet with my hands.

Then, the Walking Mushroom shook its legs and resisted.

Surprisingly, its legs have quite a lot of strength. I thought I could put it in the Magic Bag as it is, but I can’t because it’s still alive.

“What should I do with this?”

It’s hard to put it in a bag or a pocket if it rampages like this.

Whenever I am troubled, it’s the turn of Appraisal-sensei.

【Walking Mushroom】

Edible mushrooms that grow in the forests. When enemies approach, they make full use of their leg-like mushrooms and escape. However, as its name implies, its speed is close to the walking speed of a human, so it can be easily collected.

Drying them under the sun increases the umami. More so than its main body, the small, leg-like mushrooms are more delicious.

Note that the power of its legs will be so strong that you will be surprised. At the time of collection, if you lightly pierce the crotch with a sharp tip, the legs will stop moving.

I used Appraisal while wishing for an efficient method of collecting Walking Mushrooms and the information I wanted was displayed on top of things I already knew.

In-inner legs, that, is it okay to pierce such a place?

The area around my crotch contains a certain important organ and also my butt, and I get cold feet imagining it. However, there’s no other choice.

I took out a wooden skewer I bought out from the Magic Bag.

Then, I gently pricked the crotch of the collected mushroom.

Suddenly, the legs that were pattering about stopped and became docile.

Putting it close to the Magic Bag, it was neatly sucked in.

That meant that it was either dead or in a condition of apparent death.

It felt like pricking a squid.

I wonder what kind of structure it has inside.

After that, I continued to catch mushrooms, gently pierce them with a skewer, and gently put them into the Magic Bag. Then repeat.

Although I only require 10 mushrooms for delivery, since it is edible, it would be a good idea to keep some for myself.

I collected about thirty pieces separately from the requested amount, and I could no longer see any mushrooms within my sight.

A normal person would give up, but for myself who can use Detection, just disappearing from my sight is not enough to let you escape from me.

“Walking Mushroom, Detection.”

Then, I saw that the escaped Walking Mushrooms were rooted back into the ground behind a group of trees as if they were free from danger.

“Unfortunately, I won’t let you go!”

“Fuu, did I collect all the mushrooms yet?”

I grabbed the last Walking Mushroom displayed within my sight and stored it in my Magic Bag.

In total, I collected about a hundred of them.

I didn’t intend to collect so much at first, but it was so fun to catch the escaped mushrooms, and I merrily picked them up like a child.

Well, this mushroom is a delicious ingredient so it will be easily sold at the Guild.

I have a Magic Bag so it’s easy to store, therefore, I don’t have any problems.

Since I finished collecting the Mint Leaves and the Walking Mushrooms, what’s left is the Crescenka Nectar. [1]

Having moved away from my previous location to chase after the mushrooms, I need to use Detection to search for Crescenka Nectar again.

Then, at the location where I first saw it, only the nectar accumulated by Crescenka flowers were being displayed.

Smiling wryly at the strange sight, I decided to head over.

As I walked through the bushes, I could see red flowers blooming.

They were red flowers dangling in a row, growing on long stems.

【Crescenka】

It can store excess nutrients as nectar, and you can collect it by pushing your finger from the root of the stem toward the flower. Be careful not to press the flower part, as bitterness will be mixed in. The stored nectar is smooth and very sweet.

When I tried using Appraisal, the flowers were indeed displayed as Crescenka.

In any case, this seems to be the original flower where the nectar can be collected from.

Appraisal-sensei already taught me how to collect the nectar, so I will try it out immediately.

When I pushed my finger from the root of the stem towards the tip, an orange liquid came out from the drooping petals.

I lightly dabbed it with my finger and licked it.

“Sweet…!”

It doesn’t have the stubborn sweetness that entangles your throat but is smooth and moderately sweet.

Ever since coming over to this world, I have hardly eaten anything sweet, so the sweetness of Crescenka Nectar feels even more delicious.

I don’t have a sweet tooth, but it’s so delicious that I don’t want to stop licking it.

However, I can’t continue like this.

I took out a bottle used for collection out of my Magic Bag and collected the nectar.

The amount of nectar flowing from the Crescenka flower decreased when about a quarter of the bottle was filled.

As an experiment, I stopped filling the bottle and tried pressing the flower part strongly.

I placed my finger below the dropping nectar and licked it.

“Uwah, there’s bitterness mixed in.”

If you press the flower part, something like the green odor found in plants is mixed in.

No matter how sweet the honey is, this bitterness spoils it.

For example, if this is mixed in, the request will fail. It tastes horrible to that extent.

Let’s move away from the flower where the nectar has run out and proceed to the next one.

Pour the nectar into the jar correctly as taught by the Appraisal-sensei. The bottle was finally filled after the third Crescenka flower ran out of nectar.

As per the request, I need to deliver three bottles, so let’s store this full bottle into the Magic Bag for now. Take out a new bottle and repeat the process.

Approximately three bottles were filled with nectar, but of course, I didn’t stop collecting them.

It’s my precious sweetness. I have to collect it so I can eat it myself in the future.

Doing so, I could collect about two bottles of Crescenka Nectar for myself and all the flowers ran out of accumulated nectar.

Although I could use Detection to collect more, it is dangerous to enter deep into a forest that I have never explored before.

Since I was able to collect all three requested materials and am hungry, I will return now.

Use Detection with magic stones as the keyword to secure a safe route.

“I know. Let’s eat some bread with Crescenka Nectar.”

I came up with a good idea if I say so myself. From my Magic Bag, I took the bottle of nectar I just collected and the bread I bought out.

Since I bought it as a luxurious item, it is not a hard bread eaten as preserved food, but a fluffy white bread.

Cut the bread into slices, spread on the freshly harvested nectar, and chow it down.

“Yup, it’s delicious.”

Wheat-flavored bread overlaps with the gentle-tasting nectar; it’s awesome.

I feel like I can continue to eat this forever.

The fact that I can eat leisurely while taking a walk in the forest like this is thanks to God who gave me the Detection skill.

Firing out Detection, various materials were outlined throughout the forest.

I haven’t seen most of them, and here seems to be more abundant in materials compared to the forest near Ferumi village.

As I thought, if you come to a new location, you can discover new materials.

I was a little lonely coming to a town where I don’t know anyone, but with this, I now think that it was worth it.

Just by encountering new materials, my heart wouldn’t stop thumping in excitement.

Translator’s Notes

  1. Same kanji (蜜 = mitsu) is used for nectar and honey, so I decided to translate this word as Crescenka Nectar since it came from a flower. In reality, it can be used interchangeably.

Chapter 21: First Request at the Guild

“I want to receive a request immediately, is it okay?”

“What kind of request would you like?”

Oh, there seems to be no problem even if I receive a request on my first day.

“Collecting Azami Herbs and delivering Light Bugs and…”

“A-ah, those collection requests are ranked E. Are you sure?”

“I know. But I can receive requests one rank higher right?”

“Is that so. For you who have just registered today, myself as a staff member, I can’t recommend you to take up that kind of challenge….”

Since I’ve collected materials countless times back in Ferumi Village, I’m not a complete beginner. However, from the perspective of Rabis who is unaware of that, I am a newcomer who has just registered and is not credible.

If such a person suddenly tries to receive a request above their rank, it is natural to stop them.

Although it is not against the rules, the guild staff do not recommend it.

Also, I did break the registration plate just now. I want to avoid causing her more problems.

“I understand. Then, can you tell me some F ranked collection requests that I can handle?”

“Yes. I would like to recommend collection requests for Walking Mushrooms [1], Crescenka Nectar, Mint Leaves, etc.”

Saying so, Rabis picked up some parchments and put them onto the reception table.

Walking Mushrooms are considered as a type of mysterious material. They grow naturally in forests and, as their name suggests, are mushrooms that can walk.

They are not monsters but are normal mushrooms. They will walk and run away but they will not cause any harm to us.

Next is Crescenka Honey. It seems that it is the nectar collected from a flower called Crescenka. This flower accumulates its nectar, and it grows in the forests. Again, this flower won’t cause any harm.

And, I already know about Mint Leaves so there’s no problem there.

All of them are not dangerous to collect, so they are easy requests that F-rankers can appreciate.

“Okay, then I’ll take those three.”

“Three? You’ll get fined if you fail the requests, okay?”

“It’s okay. I don’t think I will need so much time with these three.”

If the value of the material is not so high, I can find it immediately by using Detection. It’s not like I need to deliver them in batches of hundreds too.

“Understood. Then, I will process these three requests.”

While looking like she had a headache, Rabis completed the procedure for me.

Maybe she’s thinking that I will understand if I experience the impending failure by myself.

Rabis may think that I’m being reckless, but I do have confidence that I can complete the requests.

While thinking about that, I suddenly realized something.

Excluding the Mint Leaves, I haven’t seen the Crescenka Nectar nor the Walking Mushrooms yet. I can’t use Detection with things I haven’t seen with my own eyes, and it’ll take time to search manually.

“Um, do you have any samples of Walking Mushrooms and Crescenka Honey?

“…..They were coincidentally delivered this morning. Could it be that you do not recognize them?”

“I know Mint Leaves but….”

Averting my gaze and saying so in a small voice, Rabis let out a sigh.

Despite that, Rabis left the reception desk and brought out two items from the inner room for me.

“This is a Walking Mushroom, and here is the nectar collected from Crescenka flowers.”

The brown mushrooms placed on the table looked like shiitake. At first glance, it looked like normal mushrooms, but legs grew out from its lower part. Do they use these to walk?

The other item was a bottle containing an orange-coloured liquid. When I placed it on my hand, it wasn’t as viscous as honey and was surprisingly watery.

【Crescenka Flower’s Nectar】

The nectar that can be collected from the Crescenka flowers. This smooth nectar can be used in cooking and in making sweets and has a wide range of uses. Its popularity stems from its mellow sweetness.

Just in case, I used Appraisal on both of them.

Since it was just the nectar, the information displayed for Crescenka was a bit short. However, it’s enough for me.

Now that I was able to see the real thing, I can now easily pick them up while searching in the forest.

“Thank you. I’m okay with this.”

I said so with a refreshing smile, but Rabis’s suspicious gaze did not disappear.

I was able to receive the request safely, and I decided to head towards the eastern forest nearby where Rebis recommended that it was easy to collect the materials.

Unlike the forests near Ferumi Village, the visibility is a little poor here because the height of trees is quite low.

However, to me who has Detection, this much is nothing more than a slight calculation error.

“Magic Stone, Detection.”

First of all, to confirm the safety of the surroundings, I used Detection with magic stone as the keyword.

Seems like there are no monsters within my detection range.

Since this is the only forest near Grantel where a lot of humans live, monsters seem to avoid approaching the town nor the forest entrance.

After confirming the absence of monsters, I pushed forward quickly.

Once I exit the previous range, I use Detection with magic stones again.

Then, I started to see purple-coloured outlines glowing around monsters appearing into my sight.

A group of three goblins, a turtle-like monster, and a swarm of butterfly-like monsters.

It seems that all of them have low magic power and thus pose a low danger, but there are a lot of monsters that I have never seen before.

There were a lot of monsters, and that means more materials are lying around on the ground, waiting to be collected.

Feeling more enthused, I decided to use Detection to search for the requested materials first.

“Mint Leaf, Walking Mushroom, Crescenka Nectar, Detection!”

For my magic waves to reach farther away, I focused and released my power in one shot.

The magic waves gave back responses in the form of purple-coloured outlines.

I tried to search for three simultaneous materials and it succeeded with no problems.

Checking out the results, I could see a cluster of mushrooms lined up close to the trees, mint leaves growing nearby, and the ones floating in the distance were Crescenka’s―― wait, floating?

What’s going on with that? I think it’s probably the nectar inside the Crescenka flowers, but I didn’t expect them to be in that long and narrow shape.

“…Oh, I’ve seen the Crescenka nectar, but I’ve never seen the flower itself.”

I suddenly realized it when I thought about it.

I saw the nectar but never saw any flowers.

In other words, it seems like what’s being displayed right now is the nectar and not the flowers.

It’s a useful unique skill, but I thought it was a little inflexible.

After all, it’s showing me a silhouette that doesn’t look like flowers at all.

Well, I’m sure there are some Crescenka flowers over there for sure.

After that, I used a knife to collect the mint leaves growing nearby.

I collected a lot of these back in the forest near Ferumi village.

It’s not against the rules to deliver what I already own to the client, but since I received it as my first request, I want to deliver what I collect now.

Also, I was concerned that the location would make the leaves look different.

Observing the plants, it seems that they’re not particularly different from the ones growing at Ferumi Village.

I will collect 10 leaves to be delivered as requested and 10 leaves that I personally want.

I wished I had a tool similar to a weeding fork in my previous world to collect materials like these.

After collecting the mint leaves, next are Walking Mushrooms.

Heading towards the location where the mushrooms were outlined, I can see many of them growing alongside the trees. However, unlike the one that Rabis showed me, these had no legs.

Since Detection indicated these, it shouldn’t be mistaken.

While in doubt I approached the mushrooms, and suddenly legs grew from the Walking Mushrooms.

“Wha-“

I was surprised at the simultaneous growth of feet from hundreds of mushrooms, and I leaked out a voice stupidly.

When I was staring at it, the Walking Mushrooms began to run away using their legs like a human.

“O-oh, the mushrooms are walking!”

However, true to its name, its speed is similar to that of a human walking slowly.

The mushrooms seemed to be moving their legs desperately, but their stride was so small that they didn’t proceed at all.

Despite that, the spectacle of mushrooms walking out with their legs growing is fantastic and fun to watch. It’s as if I was sucked into a fantasy world.

I didn’t harvest any and chased after the mushrooms for a while.

When I walked to the center of the mushrooms without stepping on it, I felt as if I had become the king of the mushrooms. I’m having fun.

Translator’s Notes

  1. Lit. アルキノコ (Arukinoko) Aruki (verb.) = walk, Kinoko = mushroom. Therefore, arukinoko is a portmanteau between these two words; thus, Walking Mushroom.

Chapter 19: Cat’s Tail Pavilion

“This is Cat’s Tail Pavilion, the place where I work nya!”

Brought along by Mia, we walked along the main street shortly before arriving at the destination.

Similar to other buildings, the inn was made from stone and had 4 floors. The signboard had the words ‘Cat’s Tail Pavilion’ written in cute handwriting, complete with cat ears and tail in the design.

Peeking inside, the first floor was wide and contained the reception and the dining hall. The chefs working in the kitchen and the waitresses walking around were all beastmen with cat ears.

Corresponding to its name, it seems like this inn is being managed by the cat beastmen tribe.

“It seems like your customers who come to dine aren’t all beastmen, right?”

I thought since they had only beastmen workers, their customers would also be beastmen. However, there were a lot of humans inside.

“That’s right nya. On the contrary, I have a feeling that we have more human customers in proportion. It seems like humans find our tails and ears unusual nya.”

While twitching her ears and tail, Mia answered me.

Being waited on by cute girls is in itself able to bring happiness, however, add in swishing tails and ears into the equation, and you are never bored and are healed by the sight.

“Ah! Mia, you finally came back! Hurry and come help out!”

“Nyaa, wait a min nya! I’m with a customer nya!”

Shifting my sight inwards, I saw a black-haired catwoman calling out to Mia.

So not all cat beastmen use ‘nya’ in their words or at the end of their sentences.

“So, Shuu. What’s your decision nya?”

Checking with the sign outside, I confirmed that what Mia said about how one night with 2 meals included costing 1 silver coin is correct.

Along the way, I did check out the prices of other inns, and while their locations were worse, there were places where the price doubled the cost here.

Inns farther away from the main street have bad atmospheres, and I don’t want to think about the hygiene levels.

In that case, I think it’s a good idea to stay here where it’s clean plus it’s facing the main street. It’s not as if I have to find a cheap inn to stay in too.

“Your price is not bad and the atmosphere looks good so I’ll stay here.”

“Nyaaa! Thank you for your patronage nya~! I’ll check you in so follow me to the reception nya!”

Following Mia who was waving her tail happily, I walked to the reception counter.

First, I’ll stay for 10 nights. If I am satisfied, let’s continue to stay here.

After paying the fee of 10 silver coins, Mia took me to my room.

“This is Shuu’s room nya!”

My room was on the third floor, right at the corner, and with good sunlight shining inside. Inside the room, a bed, table, chairs, drawers and shelves were placed. A hook to hang clothes on was also pegged to the wall.

There were curtains at the windows, and the bedsheets were beautiful.

As expected, the room wasn’t that wide. However, even with the bed, it doesn’t feel suffocating. It feels like a good room.

Mia then explained that during the day, the dining hall would be a normal restaurant but it will be turned into a bar at night.

She also made small talk and asked me about the inn I stayed at back in Ferumi Village.

However, there was one special rule that she put extra emphasis on.

That is, to not touch the waitresses’ tails or ears without permission.

To beastmen, the act of touching their ears or tails requires great trust in that person. It’s not the indecency that often accompanies the nightlife that I was imagining but more like a disgusting feeling that happens when a stranger touches or hugs you.

However, many humans are ignorant of this fact and some try to touch the waitresses with curiosity.

If I do something bad like that, I would be kicked out, so she told me.

Well, even though these girls are cute like a cat would be but they are also individual people. It’s normal to feel that way.

I nodded strongly, and Mia was satisfied.

“I’ve pretty much finished explaining, do you want to ask about something else nya?”

“Can I ask about the public bathhouse again?”

“……You can nya. Go straight down this road and you’ll find it nya.”

A bit amazed, Mia answered me.

Of course, I do want to have a meal and relax in bed at the inn.

However, after coming over to this world, I’ve never entered a bath even once.

More so than hunger or fatigue, the desire to enter a bath is the strongest.

Receiving the directions from Mia, I deposited my key at the reception and immediately headed to the bathhouse.

“Haa~, finally a bath. I feel alive again~”

As per Mia’s directions, I walked straight and arrived at the public bath. As soon as I finished washing my body, I immediately dipped in hot water.

The feeling of the warm water that wraps around your body is comfortable. The tiredness accumulated until arriving at Grantel was melted away into the hot water.

“After all, a hot bath is great.”

At Ferumi Village or on the carriage, I used warm water to wipe down my body.

However, my fatigue didn’t go away and I don’t feel refreshed that way.

Elementary Magic included spells to create earth walls and hot water, but it is unlikely that I can control the temperature precisely with my skills. I was afraid to experiment it with my own body.

Plus, I couldn’t practice as much as I wanted on the carriage.

Despite that, it is now possible for me to be immersed in a wide space filled with hot water while paying only two copper coins.

The bathtub is very large. I think it can accommodate up to 30 adults easily with room to spare.

There is a feeling of liberation, probably because the ceiling is high, and the pillars are decorated, giving it a luxurious feel.

The wall has a faucet that imitates the face of a dragon where hot water gushed out.

Since I feel a faint magical power, this faucet is probably a magic tool that produces hot water.

It seems convenient to have a magic tool that can produce hot water like this.

Living in a peaceful countryside location like Ferumi Village is good on its own, but a larger city like Grantel sure is much more convenient.

If I could combine both into one, then I would no longer have any more complaints. However, things not going the way we wish for it to be is a truth of the world.

Either you choose one, or you can choose to create an environment that suits you as the third choice.

“Well, never mind that, let’s slowly soak in hot water for now.”

I submerged my body, soaked firmly up to my shoulders, and exhaled comfortably.

Chapter 18: To Grantel

“Eh? Podan-san and Sanaria-san?”

The day after having an extravagant send-off party at the inn. After packing my belongings into my Magic Bag and tying up any loose ends, I exited the inn to find Podan-san and Sanaria-san waiting outside with a carriage.

“It must be hard to walk all the way to Grantel. We’ll be with you for only part of the way, but we can give you a ride.”

I thought he meant that he would see me off when I heard his words yesterday, but I never expected that he would give me a ride in his carriage and accompany me on my journey.

“Eh, but to go out of your way and prepare a carriage for me is too much…”

“Since I was in your care, this much is natural. Furthermore, we were planning to go trade with our neighboring villages too. We’re not making any losses.”

While smiling happily, Sanaria-san informed me as such.

I looked over at their baggage and saw wooden boxes filled with what was probably merchandise.

Probably, they rushed and prepared this trip in a hurry to accompany me, so I wouldn’t be so uncouth here as to reject them.

“Thank you. Then, please take care of me while we are together.”

“Sure, leave it to us. In any care, if any monsters appear on the road, we will ask you to handle them.”

“At any rate, you once brought back a frozen Blue Grizzly, right~?”

The incident where I carried back a Blue Bear at the inn caused such a huge disturbance that it’s now widespread in the village.

Lately, I’ve been dealing with some kids in the village who have been calling me names like ‘Bear Killer Onii-chan” and such. Dragonslayer is cool, but I kind of dislike having an image of being a Bear Killer.

“Ahaha, I’ll be careful and try to avoid any monsters.”

I do have the power to defeat monsters, but it’s different from being able to say I can fight them.

If not for the charm of the material, I wouldn’t have challenged that particular bear.

“Nico, Roland, Anna-san, I have been in your care. Will it be okay to stay over again when I come and visit this village?”

“Isn’t that obvious?”

“If life in the city doesn’t fit you then come back here, okay?”

Roland, who laughed out loud while slapping my shoulder, and Anna-san said so.

Come back anytime. Hearing their words, could I be even happier?

While being overcome with emotions by their kind words, Nico came up next.

“Shuu-san, thank you for telling me about your adventures and the materials you collected. I was happy about being together with you!”

“Thank you, the days I spent with Nico were also filled with happiness. I will come back again, so at that time, I’ll tell you about lots of materials.”

“Yup, I’ll look forward to it!”

“……I’ll say this once, I won’t give you my Nico, get it?”

And it was such a pleasant conversation. Stupid daddy Roland had to go and ruin the moment with his forceful gaze and remarks.

“I’m not trying to flirt at all.”

There’s no way I will flirt with a young girl. That’s a crime.

I don’t know the rules of this world, but it’s impossible with my own personal morals.

“I think Shuu is a good partner. He brings back lots of materials, and we can also trust him to defeat monsters.”

“Yup, and he’s also very kind!”

“Gununununu, Shuu. Since when did you clear the obstacles…..!” [1]

“It’s a misunderstanding! I have no such intentions! In that case, shall we move out!”

Since the flow of the conversation was becoming more and more improper, I ran away and boarded Podan-san’s carriage.

Anna-san and Nico were probably joking, but Roland was taking it completely seriously. As always, he always becomes so narrow-minded when it comes to Nico.

“Shall we depart then?”

“Yes, please.”

I get the feeling that if we get hold back any more than this, we won’t be able to leave.

Then, Podan-san who sat in the driver seat lashed the whip, and the horse started to move forward slowly.

Looking outside the window, villagers who helped me, not only Roland’s family, came to send me off. People who were close to me, and people who weren’t too.

When there are travellers, people pray for their safety. The warmth in their atmosphere was clearly felt by me.

“Anytime, come stay at the inn again!”

“Tell me more about materials then!”

“Thank you very, very much! I will return in the future!”

Answering the several voices that called out to me kindly, I departed from Ferumi Village as I waved my hands.

I, who has set out from Ferumi Village, separated from Podan-san and Sanaria-san after arriving at the fourth village. I transferred to another carriage which was headed towards Grantel.

From that point, I jolted about on the carriage for three weeks.

Swaying atop the carriage, I gazed at the scenery flowing past. Then, enormous ramparts appeared in view.

“Fuu, we finally arrived. See that? That’s the walls of Grantel.”

Unintentionally leaning forward to take a closer look, the coachman Oji-san let out a sigh of relief and told me.

I was overwhelmed at the sight of the giant ramparts, towering at over 30 meters high.

It’s probably countermeasures against monsters. If these walls surrounded the whole city, I can somehow imagine the size of Grantel.

In front of the gates to Grantel, lots of people were lined up. I think those knight-like men who were wearing armour are the immigration officers, and they are inspecting the people wanting to enter the city.

As for us, we were headed towards a different line specifically for carriages.

Sitting silently inside the carriage was too boring for me, so I looked at the people lining up outside.

Then, amongst the people in the lines, I saw a human with dog ears and a tail.

“E-eh? Oji-san, there are people with animal ears and tails?”

“They’re called beastmen. You, is this your first time meeting one?”

“Y-yes, you can say that….”

The common beastmen found in any fantasy setting. I never thought these kinds of races existed in this world.

After asking the uncle, he told me that apart from beastmen, there are also elves, dwarves, and similar races in this world.

I’ve been transferred here for over a month, but I’ve never heard about them at all. Maybe, the reason was that the village I stayed at consisted of only humans.

Oji-san laughed and called me a typical country bumpkin.

I see, so there are other races apart from humans in this world.

After waiting for almost an hour, the goods carried by my carriage were finally up for inspection.

Simultaneously, it was time for immigration.

“Name?”

“I am called Shuu.”

“Where did you come from?”

“I came from Ferumi Village.”

“Reason for coming here?”

“I plan to sign up as an adventurer at the Adventurer’s Guild and do some work.”

“Hm, no issues. You can pass.”

Maybe since I answered disinterestedly, the guard decided that there were no problems. Our carriage was then allowed to enter the gate into the city of Grantel.

Unlike Ferumi Village, there were numerous buildings and large streets.

There, just like what Oji-san told me, were beastmen, elves, dwarves, and lots of people walking around shopping, assembling, or simply making noise.

The miscellaneous liveliness of this city is making me a bit astonished.

“We’ve arrived at Grantel, so I guess this is as far as I take you.”

“Yes, thank you for everything until now!”

Since we’ve arrived at Grantel, the people aboard the carriage all had to get down.

The payment was already settled in advance, so people were taking off from the carriage quickly, blurring into the surrounding crowd.

A farmer who came to sell his vegetables, a male warrior carrying weapons on his shoulder. Everyone seems to have their objectives in this city.

I can’t stand dazedly here. I must take some action soon.

“Now then, first is to find an inn.”

My goal was to become an adventurer at the Adventurer’s Guild, but first and foremost, what every traveller has to do when entering a town is to find a place to stay. It won’t be funny if I am tardy and all the rooms are full.

“Nyaー! Onii-san, are you searching for an inn nya?”

“Yes?”

Nya? Surprised at the choice of sentence endings, I turned my gaze around and saw a brown-haired, cute beastwoman with cat ears standing there.

She was carrying a paper bag full of fruits, so she was probably in the middle of grocery shopping.

“I am working at a nearby inn called Cat’s Tail Pavilion and my name is Mia nya! For Onii-sans who have just arrived like you, everyone looks for an inn so I called out to you nya.”

I see. She had her eyes on me because she saw my fellow passengers getting off the carriage. Unlike her cute front, she has a strong business spirit behind her appearance.

“Hmm, what should I do?”

Ignoring the fact that she’s a cute cat girl, I’m not the type of person to mindlessly go along with the sweet words of a girl who I meet for the first time. In my previous world, offers like these often had a catch or condition and ripped people off.

“Nyaa? Onii-san, can it be that you’re doubting that my store is ripping people off? There are indeed places like that, however, our inn doesn’t play any tricks nya. We charge slightly higher because we are facing the main street. We’re also close to the Adventurer’s Guild and the public bathhouse――”

“Did you say you’re close to the public bathhouse!?”

I reflexively responded to Mia’s sales talk when she mentioned the public bathhouse.

To me who love baths, it is momentous that the distance between the bathhouse and the inn is small. There is a possibility that I will get cold if it’s too far after all.

“Ny-nyaa. It’s around a five minutes walk nya.”

“How much is a night?”

“With breakfast and dinner, a night costs 1 silver coin nya.”

Even though that is more than doubled the price back in Ferumi Village, it’s normal that there’s a price discrepancy between rural and urban areas. Given the fact that Grantel is a large city and the inn is facing the main street, the price is pretty reasonable.

“I understand. Then, let’s head towards the inn where Mia is working at first. I’ll think about it along the way. My name is Shuu. Best regards.”

“And you suspected me so much when I called out to you. Well nevermind, I’m happy to have more customers nya! For now, I’ll guide you nya!”

Mia, who was struggling with complicated emotions, wrestled back control on her feelings and walked off.

With her in the lead, I saw that her tail seemed to be swaying in a good mood.

Chapter 17: Aiming for the Next Material

Two days later. Podan-san gifted Sanaria-san with the Full Moon Flower without any problems.

Sanaria-san seemed to be extremely elated for receiving a rare flower for her birthday, and she came to personally thank me later.

Until now, I’ve been collecting materials for my own sake. It was the first time I collected something for someone else, and they were very pleased about it. It made me happy for them too.

Even without the Full Moon Flower, I doubt their relationship will have cracks between them. However, since it made their day a good day, it was for the best.

My daily life afterwards was a mix between chilling in the village and going out to collect materials in the forest. On certain days, I also practiced magic.

I went back and collected every single material I neglected during my search for the Full Moon Flower.

Of course, as a collector maniac, I want to properly pick up any materials I haven’t picked up yet. Completing collections is the absolute basics.

While on the road, I sometimes practiced Elementary Magic, sometimes widening my Detection range, and sometimes took notes about materials.

I did what I loved freely at Ferumi Village every day, and just like that, half a month passed.

Today as well, I am bringing the materials I collected to Podan-san’s store.

“Hoho, Goggogi. So there were materials like this in the nearby forests.”

“Yup, it looks like the root of some tree, however, it contains a lot of nutrients and can be used to make medicine as well.”

This ‘Goggogi’ is a plant that looks like Japanese burdock. [1] Detection gave me a response from underground so I tried digging it up.

“My Appraisal also told me the same things! I’m glad the village has access to another edible material!”

I’ve never seen this material appearing on our dining tables even once, so I assumed that no one knew about it. Apparently, I was right. Nobody knew that it was edible.

It’s buried deep in the ground, and it looks just like an ordinary root.

It’s understandable why the villagers never noticed that it was edible.

It probably tastes like Japanese burdocks though. I’m looking forward to eating it in a soup back at the inn.

“Iya~ Thanks to Shuu-san who brought in so many materials, this village’s meals have become much more varied. Thank you very much.”

“No, you don’t need to go that far. I picked these materials and brought them in as just a hobby after all.”

Improving the food situation of the village or making their lives better weren’t my intentions at all.

I bring my materials here to sell, to hear his impressions, and to debate about it. Just satisfying my wants.

That’s why I am not worthy of Podan-san’s gratitude.

“I harvested lots of these and I’m planning to sell a few. How much will you give for it?”

“Hmm, it’s difficult to say. Since it’s never been acknowledged before, I do not know how to set the price.”

The most troublesome part that accompanies trying to sell a new material is how to determine its price. If it’s something that has existed for a long time or something that is acknowledged in nearby areas, then a market price would be available. For new materials, something like that does not apply.

“……In times like this, I want Shuu-san who collected this material to name the price….”

“Ahh, in the end, it’ll be like that?”

What Podan-san said is not wrong. However, this material may become the next hot item here at Ferumi Village.

If I name a high price now, people will curse me when they want to buy it in the future.

However, since I brought it in, I can’t just dump the decision to Podan-san.

“I found it underground and it took some time to dig it out, so shall I charge 5 bronze coins for one piece then?”

“I see. Since it can be made into medicine, it can be charged slightly higher, but if you say that price is good, then I will set the price to be 5 bronze coins per piece for now.”

I want the villagers to be able to try and taste new materials.

However, if it’s priced as a high-class item, then people won’t buy it. A slightly cheaper price is good because it will make villagers want to splurge on it.

“Yes, I don’t mind. If I sell these Goggoris elsewhere, I will use this price as a reference.”

“Thank you. By the way, it seems like you’ve harvested all the materials in this area already, right?”

“That’s so. I’ve harvested most of the materials I can reach with a carefree walk.”

I harvested these Goggoris in the mountains deep in the eastern forest.

I used Detection to avoid monsters while diving in, however, an ordinary person would’ve taken half a day to reach that location.

At this point, I don’t think there are any locations left that I can reach easily on foot.

“I think it’s time to move to a different place soon.”

“You’re not someone a small village can hold after all. Surely, your decision will be for the best.”

Bringing materials to sell to Podan-san like this has hit its limits, it seems.

Plus, I want to see more, touch more, and harvest more materials.

Since I’ve completed the collection for this area, the next step is obviously moving to a new area.

“Tomorrow morning, I think I will leave this village and head to a city.”

“I understand. At that time, my wife and I will……”

Thus, that was how I decided to leave Ferumi Village.

Returning to the inn, I told my benefactors: Nico, Roland, and Anna-san that I was leaving on a journey.

“Eeehh!? Shuu-san, you’re leaving tomorrow!?”

“Yup, I want to see lots and lots of materials after all.”

“Ehh, stay longer! If you’re gone, my household income will drop a lot!”

I was feeling quite regretful, but the reality that came out of her mouth crumbled away all of my regrets.

“Instead of being lonely, you’re worried about your income…..”

“I was joking! I’ll be lonely when you leave!”

As if saying, “Don’t go,” Nico grasped the hem of my shirt.

This time, it seems like she’s feeling lonely for real.

“Hey, Nico. Don’t trouble Shuu-san that much. Since he’s a traveller, it’s obvious he has to continue travelling.”

“I know~”

Reacting to Anna-san’s remarks, Nico grumbled back a bit.

Can I take her response as a sign that I’m being regarded as a good Onii-san by Nico?

I’m way happier than her not giving me a response at all if I told her I was leaving.

“And, where are you headed next?”

“I’m aiming for a large city closest to here, Grantel.”

“In that case, there’s an Adventurer’s Guild there, and various materials are available in the mountains and forests around that area. It may be the most suitable location for you who are skilled in collecting materials.”

I heard that there’s a mine as well. It seems to be a place abundant with materials.

I want to try searching for unseen ores and crystals too.

“Well then, to wish a good journey for Shuu, tonight we feast!”

“I agree. I’ll prepare an especially extravagant dinner for you.”

“Thank you very much!”

As if to shake off the sorrowful mood, Anna-san and Roland announced such words brightly. I am frankly grateful.

An unexpected traveller who dropped by out of nowhere, and to go as far as to treat me this well… As I thought, this village is very comfortable.

Chapter 16: Request Completed

After returning to the village with the Full Moon Flower, I headed to Podan-san’s general store first.

“Welcome. Ara, a face I haven’t seen before. Could you be Shuu-san who’s been staying in the village recently?”

Entering the general store, I saw that the person at the counter wasn’t the usual Podan-san, but a graceful woman sporting a gentle smile instead.

“Yes, that’s correct. Nice to meet you, I am Shuu. Could you be Podan-san’s wife?”

“Yes, my name is Sanaria.”

As I thought. Sanaria-san is Podan-san’s wife.

She should be around Podan-san’s age, but she still looks young. I kind of understand why Podan-san wanted to send her a Full Moon Flower now.

“Oya, Shuu-san. How can I help you today?”

Speak of the devil. Podan-san just came out of the inner room.

Well, we can’t possibly discuss the Full Moon Flower in front of the soon-to-be recipient of the birthday gift.

“About the loaned magic stove, I became interested in it. Do you have other types? I want to browse them slowly, see.”

“Ahh, I see. In that case, our inner room contains other varieties so please come in.”

I stressed the part where I loaned the magic stove, and it seems like Podan-san understood my meaning and urged me inside.

The room I was guided into was a smaller lounge, complete with sofas and carpets, giving off a comfortable atmosphere.

Urged by Podan-san, I sat down on a sofa.

However, he didn’t approach me and went back to the shelf behind him to search for some items instead.

“Please wait a few moments. My wife is probably preparing tea.”

I see. Since there’s a possibility that she will come in with tea, we should discuss it afterwards.

Podan-san put down things similar to magic stoves on the table, probably as camouflage to fool Sanaria-san.

I am interested in seeing other magical stoves for real though.

“If you’d like, please feel free to look at these magic stoves.”

“Then, I won’t hold back.”

On the table, there were stoves like the one I have, bulkier ones, and ones that were more compact.

The smaller ones were probably useful for boiling water, however, for me who owns a Magic Bag, I’m not interested in the benefits of a compact stove.

In the end, I want to buy another one like the one I have.

Normally, Podan-san would give me explanations or recommendations while I am looking at his goods, but today he is fidgeting and can’t calm down.

Did I find him a Full Moon Flower? Podan-san probably wants to know the answer already.

“Excuse me, tea is ready.”

After looking at the stoves for a while longer, a knock sounded on the door and Sanaria-san came inside.

If we had started talking about the Full Moon Flower right after we came in, this would be when we will be busted.

What was offered to me was a cup of tea, similarly colored like Japanese green tea.

“I can smell a faint, refreshing mint scent.”

“Yes, this tea was made from boiling dried mint leaves after all.”

I see. So it’s something like Mint Tea.

After drinking one gulp, the refreshing taste was unexpectedly mild.

“Ah, this is easier to drink than I expected.”

“If you bite fresh mint, it will be spicy, but if you dry and boil it, it will become milder.”

Hee, I didn’t know that. This kind of information may come out if I specifically asked Appraisal for it, but I don’t usually do that anyway.

Even for materials, people will still use them in varied ways, huh?

“We can also use mint leaves to remove the smell from meat and――”

Getting into the talk about mint leaves, Sanaria-san talked about it to me happily.

For me, it is very helpful being able to learn about the uses of mint as tea or as a herb in cooking. However, Podan-san who is anxiously waiting to ask about the Full Moon Flower is pitiful.

“Now then, please take your time.”

After a while, maybe she was satisfied with her explanation about mint leaves, Sanaria-san left the room in a good mood.

“I’m sorry, my wife sometimes won’t stop talking if she gets started…”

“I don’t mind. I got to learn about how to use mint leaves too.”

“Thank you for that. Now then, about the material in question, how was it?”

“I found it, the Full Moon Flower.”

To Podan-san who asked with uncertainty, I grinned and answered him with a smile, bringing the Full Moon Flower out from the Magic Bag.

With a shocked gaze, Podan-san then examined the flower carefully.

“Oooh, there is no doubt that this is the Full Moon Flower! Shuu-san, thank you very much! This will be the perfect gift for my wife!”

Holding the Full Moon Flower preciously, Podan-san bowed his head deeply.

I underestimated the intensity of his response, and am now feeling a bit shameful.

“No, you also reduced the price of an expensive magic tool for me too.”

“Even so, this is not something you can buy with just money. That’s why I am sincerely grateful to you.”

Well, it certainly was a material I couldn’t find even after firing volleys of Detection. An ordinary person would’ve taken much longer to search for it.

What I should display right now is not modesty, but the response a material collector accomplishing his request should say.

“You’re welcome.”

 ◆

“Welcome back, Shuu-san. How was it today?”

After receiving my remuneration of 3 gold coins from Podan-san, I returned to the inn from the general store. There, Nico came out to greet me with a smile.

“It was perfect. I found it and gave it to Podan-san properly.”

“I see! Congrats! But, you already gave it to him huh….”

Nico was a bit disappointed.

Seeing her like that, it became apparent that she must have wanted to see the Full Moon Flower too.

Nico was there when the request was made, so maybe I should’ve shown it to her too.

While I was worrying over what to do, Anna-san came and rubbed Nico’s head.

“Now, now, don’t be so dejected. We can just ask Sanaria-san to give us a look later, right?”

“Un, I’ll do that!”

Nico nodded strongly and went to wipe the tables in the dining hall.

Well, it’s not like the Full Moon Flower will disappear.

If we go to the general store after Sanaria-san’s birthday, I’m sure it’ll be displayed there.

The light of the Full Moon Flower will last for one week, so the beauty won’t lessen so much.

“Sorry for troubling you like that.”

“No, it’s my fault for not being considerate enough.”

Nico was really interested in the Full Moon Flower back in the general store too. I could’ve dropped in to have her take a look for a bit first.

“Now, your stomach is probably empty after returning right? What do you want to eat today? I can also cook using the materials you collected!”

“Ah, in that case, I have this meat I want you to cook for me!”

“Meat, is it?”

It was a coincidence, but I did get my hands on an edible ingredient.

I led Anna-san to the courtyard and took the Blue Grizzly ice sculpture out of my Magic Bag.

“Gyaaaaaaaaa!? Wa-wait, Shuu! You!”

At that moment, Anna-san let out a loud shriek.

H-hmm? Is this thing that surprising?

“W-what happened?! Anna!”

“Mom!? Wait, uwaah! It’s a huge Blue Grizzly!”

Hearing Anna-san’s uproar, Roland came out from the kitchen, and Nico followed after him from the direction of the dining hall.

“What? What?”

“It can’t be, did a Blue Grizzly appear!?”

Ah, this is becoming a bigger scene that I thought. It was too late to realize that though.

Maybe the screams of these three resounded too much, the neighbours also shuffled over to take a look.

Hearing screams unsuited to this peaceful village, it can’t be helped that people are curious.

After explaining for almost an hour, I managed to bring the situation under control. Anna-san and Roland got mad and told me not to bring out something like this so lightheartedly.

Translator’s Notes

I decided to keep Japanese exclamations like “Ara”, “Oya”, “Hee” and so on as they are. I think it sounds better this way.

Chapter 15: Full Moon Flower

The next day. I woke up even earlier than yesterday, had breakfast, and finished my preparations for departure.

“Shuu-san, you’re heading out early today!”

“Because I couldn’t find what I wanted yesterday. I want to find it today so I’m going out early.”

“Podan-san’s wife’s birthday is closing in, so you need to find it quickly! Podan-san is probably feeling impatient right now.”

“Don’t pressure me too much please.”

This isn’t a simple favour. It will affect Podan-san’s marital relationship from now on as well.

I need to find it before her birthday at any cost.

“Well then, I’m going.”

“Sureeee, travel safely~”

Being sent off by Nico, I departed from the inn.

Heading towards the village’s gate, I noticed that the person standing guard today is not Roland.

Well, that’s obvious. He also needs to manage the inn and live his normal life. There’s no way he will be standing guard every day.

It’s a bit of a shame I don’t get to see an acquaintance. However, I properly told the guard my destination and left the village.

Today, I’m heading towards the same, ol’ forest in the south.

However, since I already searched very thoroughly yesterday, I will head even deeper today. I will ignore the outer perimeter.

After running for a while, I entered the southern forest. I then activated Detection with magic stones as the keyword.

Owing to the practice last night, I could cover a slightly bigger range than before and monsters were displayed more extensively compared to yesterday.

Since faster monsters can close in on me almost instantly, I am thankful for being able to perceive them from a greater distance.

I pushed my way forward while detouring away from where the monsters are, passing through the areas I already searched in just a few moments.

Then, I arrived at where I left off yesterday. Thinking about how I’m already at the location I took a day to reach yesterday with just an hour today made me marvel at my speed.

“Alright, Detection!”

Without any further ado, I activated Detection. Condensing the magic power within my body, I imagined magic waves flying off in one shot and fired.

This was the image that received the most responses when I practiced last night.

With me at the center, magic waves spread outwards and penetrated deep into the surroundings.

And then, lots and lots of materials appeared within my sight.

I think I sense a radius of around 150 meters. It increased greatly from yesterday.

However, no orange-coloured materials were displayed. To be sure, I also looked for the lower-ranked red-coloured materials to see if there were any flowers, but there were none.

If there are none here, then I need to use Detection again outside this range. And repeat until I find it.

I need to find the Full Moon Flower today, at all costs. I must restrain myself and regretfully leave unrelated materials behind.

Looking past the materials within my sight, I marched forward, deeper into the forest. As I concentrated, I didn’t forget to use magic stones for monsters’ Detection.

Straight ahead, there seems to be a swarm of goblins. In order not to be detected, I veered left by a big margin and continued heading forward.

In the end, my goal is to collect materials. I’m not planning to start any monster hunts anytime soon. Despite God’s misunderstanding, that is.

I will persist and discover materials and quickly harvest them. That is my top priority.

How long has it been since I’ve dove deep into this forest, I wonder? Since the surrounding trees look the same to me, my sense of direction is on the verge of collapsing.

Well, it’s fine since I properly marked my path. I can trace the way back with no problems at all.

However, I still can’t find the flower even though I’ve been using Detection all the way here, does it not grow in this forest? I’m suddenly doubting myself.

Pulling myself back, I decided to search in another direction.

I didn’t want to go to Lakia Forest since it’s infested with monsters but, with the lack of results here, maybe it’s better to search there instead.

“Let’s search again one last time to be absolutely sure…. Detection!”

As the last struggle, I fired off one last Detection.

Suddenly, an orange-coloured material was spotted within my sights.

It’s probably not the Full Moon Flower, but I am certainly interested in orange-coloured materials, no matter what it turns out to be.

I squinted my eyes to examine that material.

“Ooh? Is that a plant? No, it’s more like a flower?”

It’s far away so I can’t see it vividly, but the shape resembles a flower.

A silhouette that’s different from the Moonlight Grass.

Could it be the Full Moon Flower?

The curiosity and expectations within me swelled up rapidly.

I stopped feeling down instantly and like a fish that found water, I rushed towards the material vigorously.

Heading straight to the material, I arrived at a sunny spot with no trees.

There, a pure, white flower grew, bathing in the light of the sun――but, nearby, a large, blue-furred bear was also there.

Just by glancing at it, I could tell that it was a giant bear that doubled my height. It had a stout body with thick limbs.

If a human receives an attack from it, we will be defeated with one hit.

“Ah, not good…….”

Accidentally, I let those words leak out of my lips.

Having been in a trance over the material that could be the Full Moon Flower, I forgot to detect for monsters first.

If I had properly checked, I could’ve waited for this bear-like monster to go away first, or to lure it somewhere else.

Unfortunately, it’s too late now.

The distance between me and the bear is 10 meters. If Bear-san wanted to, it could probably reduce that space to zero in a few seconds.

Since it suddenly discovered a human, the bear went on guard. Accompanied with a low growl, it looked at me with a ferocious gaze.

Terrifying.

Because normally, humans would not face living bears every day, right?

I do want to turn around and run away right now, but I heard that bears will chase and attack if you do that.

Resisting the urge to avert my gaze, let’s use Appraisal on the bear.

【Blue Grizzly】

A monster inhibiting in the deeper parts of forests. Numerous individuals roam alone and are fundamentally timid. However, these bears have a trait of chasing and attacking those that show their backs and run away, so be careful. Danger Rank B.

Its blue pelt is renowned for its ability to protect against the cold; popular both amongst commoners and nobles. Its meat has a distinct smell but with proper preparation, you can cook the meat to be juicy and chewy.

I was right! I’m glad I didn’t turn around and ran away just now. I almost got attacked without being prepared or resolved in the least.

This monster is apparently a Blue Grizzly. According to Appraisal, its rank seems to be B. I don’t know the standard but Wagners were Rank E. Judging from that, this bear seems to be quite dangerous.

As I looked at the Blue Grizzly in front of me, I don’t think a lone man will be a suitable opponent for it.

Nico mentioned that there were a lot of these bears in Lakia Forest, the place where I was transferred to though, maybe I influenced the monsters and increased their activity. The southern forest wasn’t supposed to have any dangerous monsters.

But, my body was rebuilt by God. I still have the ability granted to me due to his misunderstanding.

Anyhow, I am a newbie at fighting. I intend to finish it with magic right away, no holding back.

I pushed out my right hand, and the Blue Grizzly took that as a signal to attack me.

“Guuooooo!!!!!!”

The giant bear drew closer, and I tried not to be overwhelmed by fear. Minding to exclude the material that could be the Full Moon Flower, I chanted the spell I’ve been practicing all this time.

“Freeze!”

And then, with me as the center, a blizzard stormed out, freezing the surroundings.

In front of my eyes, the Blue Grizzly was now an ice sculpture, still in the pose of rushing forward to attack me.

Maybe because this is the first time I’ve been attacked by a hostile monster, I accidentally used much more magic power than I planned to. As a result, my location has turned into a snow world. Each leaf, each branch, and every single tree in this vicinity has been frozen solid beautifully.

“Is that material safe!?”

Whipping my eyes towards that material that looked like it could be the Full Moon Flower, I saw that it was still safely blooming.

It seems like my control is getting better, since I strongly wished for this spot to not be frozen, and the spell was magnificently delivered.

I’m glad I practiced Freeze a lot.

After tapping the frozen Blue Grizzly in front of me to make sure it won’t me, I let out a sigh.

I’ve seen countless monsters in the forest before but this was my first battle.

Even though I do have the skills given to me by God that will keep me alive, it’s not as if feelings like fear will disappear.

“But really, to think I defeated it with Elementary Magic….”

Blue Grizzlies are ranked B. Amongst monsters, it should have boasted quite an impressive strength.

And I went and defeated it with Elementary Magic.

“He really gave me enough power to leisurely collect materials.”

What God had in mind was me being able to defeat monsters easily to collect their materials. It’s completely different from what I actually wished for, but to be able to defeat monsters like Blue Grizzlies, I guess it’s a mistake I’m glad for.

Since I have defeated the Blue Grizzly, I want to immediately check out the flower. However, I will make sure there are no monsters first.

Activating Detection with magic stones, I will confirm that there are no monsters in the vicinity. I don’t want to make the same mistake and meet monsters again.

……..Hm, it seems like there are no Blue Grizzlies around here.

After I’m sure that it’s safe, I crouched down towards the flower.

The refined petals were, without any relation to sunlight, faintly giving out a pure, white light on its own.

“…….Beautiful.”

If it was nighttime, this light would’ve been even more pretty, I bet.

A flower blooming in a sunny location; an orange-coloured material.

I am sure this is the Full Moon Flower.

Using Appraisal, its data floated into my sight.

【Full Moon Flower】

It is a very rare flower that seldomly blooms. It mainly grows using the magic power contained within the light of the moon as nutrients. With the Moon’s magic absorbed by itself, it will faintly glow, making its appearance very fantastical.

With its appearance and name that is directly related to the full moon, people relate this flower to wishing for a life together in harmony. Pulling it out by the roots will make its glow last longer.

“Yup, no mistakes. This is the Full Moon Flower!”

I finally found it! This was the material that gave me the most trouble after coming to this world. Overcoming the various problems it posed, the sense of accomplishment it gave me is awesome.

Appraisal-sensei told me to pull the flower out from its roots, so I’ll heed the advice.

The flower’s glow dimmed slightly, but it is still pulsing out plenty of light.

Could it be, the light will grow weaker as time goes on?

I do want to continue admiring this beautiful flower but since it’s for a request, let’s put it in the Magic Bag so it won’t deteriorate.

To be sure, I used Detection but there weren’t any more Full Moon Flowers nearby.

I won’t be greedy today and withdraw from here quickly. Podan-san is probably waiting impatiently.

Deciding to head back, I turned around and my eyes met with the Blue Grizzly ice sculpture.

“……This, what should I do with it?”

I want to try eating its meat, and the pelt is also a popular material.

However, how do I carry this enormous sculpture with me?

Even with the body given to me by God, I think it is too much to carry this bear on top of the weight of the ice.

Can it fit into the Magic Bag?

While I was thinking that, I moved closer to the sculpture and it was sucked into the Magic Bag.

“Uwah! It entered the bag!”

I thought Appraisal said living things can’t be inserted……ah, it froze to death so it’s not considered alive anymore.

Dead monsters are possible to be collected as a whole as materials. So that’s the case.

I thought about something scary, but I did acquire some good materials.

“Now then, let’s return to the village.”

I got my hands on excellent materials unexpectedly, so I returned in a great mood.

Chapter 14: My Second Hometown

“Yo, Shuu! Did you find the Full Moon Flower?”

The sky has already been dyed red. Having returned to the village, I met Roland who was still standing at the entrance, the same as when I left.

“Nope, I couldn’t find it.”

I did resume my search for the Full Moon Flower after lunch, but in the end, I couldn’t discover it.

Even though I have the super convenient Unique Skill ‘Detection’ but I still didn’t even see just a bit of its shadow. I’m slightly shocked.

“Well, there are days like this one. Just eat dinner, sleep, and search again tomorrow!”

Roland laughed while saying so, hitting the dejected me on the back.

“You’re right. Thank you.”

He’s right. I still have time. It’s fine to continue my search tomorrow.

Things have been favourable for me ever since I’ve arrived. The day where I can’t find my target material would inevitably come.

The fun from harvesting and the sadness from not being able to are all part of collecting materials.

Anyhow, I want to complete this task as thanks to Podan-san who helped me out.

As I determined so, Roland straightened up.

“Now then, since you’ve come back, I should go home for the day as well.”

“Perhaps, did you wait for me to return?”

“N-not really, I didn’t wait for you! I just can’t settle down if the inn’s guests haven’t come back, you get it!?”

Could Roland be a tsundere? He’s still not old enough to be called an uncle, but is there a demand for tsundere adult men?

Anyway, the fact that he’s worried about me is clear enough and it warmed up my heart.

“Yesterday, I heard you picked up the skin of a White Snake. Did you not get anything today?”

“I couldn’t find my target, the Full Moon Flower, but I did get other things though?”

“Oh, what kinds of things did you get today?”

“I found 3 White Snake skins, 4 Moonlight Grasses, Red and Purple Mushrooms and――”

“Whoa, whoa, wait a sec! Did you say 3 White Snake skins and 4 Moonlight Grasses!? Aren’t those unbelievably rare!?”

“Well, but they weren’t my target, I just picked them up along the way.”

“How can you pick up these rare materials like weeds growing along the road!? Since you looked like you had zero harvests, that’s why I consoled you! ….You, in truth, you searched for these instead of the Full Moon Flower, I’m right, aren’t I!?”

“No, you’re wrong! I found these by accident. I intently searched for the Full Moon Flower! Wait, don’t grind your fist on my head, it hurts!”

Maybe he couldn’t stomach the fact that I had, in fact, harvested some materials, so Roland used his fist to grind me on the head.

Since his fist is both big and tough, it hurts quite a lot.

After a while, he let me go. Maybe he is satisfied now.

“By the way, how much would those get you?”

“If we’re talking about the White Snake skins and Moonlight Grasses, they will bring me about 30 gold coins.”

“3-30 gold coins. You can earn such a fortune by coincidence…… You’re quite an awesome bastard, right?”

“That’s not the case at all.”

What’s amazing is the skill God gave me and not me as a person. Plus, I haven’t utilised its full abilities too.

“Don’t be so humble. You can pick up rare materials like it’s nothing. Even to someone who doesn’t know anything like me, I can tell that you’re skilled. But since you’re this talented, this village probably can’t hold you.”

Though I don’t completely agree with Roland’s words, I do plan to go to a bigger city in the future.

“After a while, you’ll head to the capital city right?”

“Yes. I want to travel to various places and collect materials.”

It is wonderful living here, but I want to discover a lot of different materials.

I have no intention of staying in one place forever. That also applies to a larger city.

“I see. I don’t know when you will leave, but feel free to relax at our place until then.”

“Sure, thanks very much.”

The location I finally arrived after coming over to this world is Ferumi Village.

Roland, Anna-san, Nico, and Podan-san warmly accepted me.

It has already become a place that feels like my hometown to me.

Even if I travel around the world, absorbed in collecting materials, let’s come back here again in the future.

“Fuuー, I’m full~”

Having finished my dinner, I am now lying on my bed in my room.

The fatigue from having worked all day and the satisfaction from having a full stomach closed in on me rapidly.

I want to relax and fall asleep just like this, but I still have something I need to do first.

Magic control practice. Of course, I won’t practice any outrageous Elementary Magic spells.

I will practice activating Detection.

Right now, I am using Detection in the form of sending out ripples of magic waves. When a material is hit, it will be displayed in my eyesight.

Appraisal-sensei told me that the farther my magic waves can reach, the more range I can cover in one go.

In other words, if I can release larger, stronger waves, I can discover materials more efficiently.

To achieve that goal, there’s no other way to practice except repeatedly using it.

Detection!”

Once I activated Detection, my magic waves went flying.

Then, the materials that were growing near the inn and inside the villager’s houses were displayed for me.

“So it also shows the materials inside houses. I’ll be able to see what other people are carrying too then.”

I’m kinda guilty since it’s like I’m peeking at the stuff in people’s houses. However, do forgive me since I don’t have any bad intentions.

The range I’m covering now is a radius of 50 meters. If I can, I want to send the magic waves ever farther away.

It seems like the image of ripples isn’t enough anymore. I need to make it spread even more.

I accumulated and accumulated my magic power, then released it in one shot.

I can now see materials from houses not shown before.

“This is looking good. I can search wider areas if I continue to practice like this.”

To not forget this feeling, I continued to practice my refined version of Detection.

Chapter 13: Cooking inside the Forest

“…….I can’t find it. This is taking longer than I expected.”

I am currently in the southern forest, searching for the Full Moon Flower. It has taken a while already.

I still cannot discover the material I was tasked with.

Full Moon Flowers are rare. On top of that, there are way too many materials within this forest that it’s hard to see.

Furthermore, the fact that Detection is too excellent is hindering my search as well. It’s too easy to discover the locations of materials just by releasing my magic waves.

I cannot go against the high of a degree of temptation.

Even though I have this cheat skill called Detection, I still can’t find that flower.

I’ve been focusing my search in sunny locations only though.

The fact that it’s rare is not for show, it seems.

But, there’s no way I am giving up.

In collecting materials, there are times when you discover things immediately, and there are times when no matter how long you search, you can’t find it.

I will use my own two feet and my skill to find it in the end.

I told myself that inside my heart, but my stomach is empty.

Looking up, the sun has already passed midway, and it is clearly the afternoon now.

Since I woke up and ate breakfast early today, I am very hungry.

Looking for materials is important, but having a meal comes first.

With a famished condition, I cannot work effectively. Let’s eat lunch here for now.

Moving towards the shade of a tree, I sat down on a stump there.

“Oops, before bringing out my tools and ingredients, I need to confirm the safety in this area first.”

I unconsciously let down my guard, but I must not forget that there are dangerous monsters in this forest.

I need to properly make sure there are no dangers nearby.

“Magic Stone, Detection!”

Using magic stones as the keyword, I used Detection.

Within the radius of 50 meters, I received no responses from any monsters.

If that’s the case, this area should be safe for now.

After confirming that it’s a safe area, I dished out the ingredients I collected today, my magic stove, and some pots.

I placed the stove down on a level surface and inserted a magic stone.

On a wooden box I also took out, I put down my chopping board. I then used my kitchen knife to cut carrots, daikon, and great burdock I bought from the inn.

Finishing that up, I lit the magic stove and put some oil into the pot.

Waiting for the pot to heat up, I cut Red, Purple, and Black Mushrooms that I have into bite-sized chunks.

I also washed some Douna plants and Mai Mai Grass until they’re clean, peeled off the tough parts, and left them soaking in a basin of water.

With this, I have finished the preparation of these ingredients for them to be delicious, according to what Appraisal-sensei told me.

Afterwards, I put some ingredients inside the pot and fried them until they’re evenly cooked, and poured the mushroom soup stock I received from Anna-san inside.

I can save time by cooking like this. I only need to bring easy-to-use bottled flavourings to season it. My Magic Bag is truly convenient.

After that, I threw in chunks of Red, Purple, and Black Mushrooms.

Bringing the soup up into a boil, I added Mai Mai Grass and Douna plants after shaking off all the excess water.

Gazing at the materials I collected dancing around wildly in the pot, I added some salt.

If I had some miso or soy sauce, this pot would taste wonderful. Unfortunately, I don’t have any.

I don’t know if they don’t exist in this world or are simply not available in Ferumi Village, but for now, I will look forward to the simple taste of this soup made purely from stock.

Since I used fresh ingredients, it may turn out tasting better than using unneeded flavourings even.

Nevermind tasting, let’s take a spoon and have some right away.

“Delicious..!”

Sweetness oozing out from the vegetables and the unique flavour of wild plants were mixed in harmony inside the mushroom stock. It’s not mind-blowing, but it is a gentle taste.

This wild plant soup is considered a success.

I want to dig in right away, but I want some side dishes. Specifically, I want meat.

Putting the pot aside on the wooden box, I bring a skillet, a thick slice of bacon, and an egg out from my Magic Bag.

You should know what I plan to do with this. I will make fried bacon and egg.

Since it is crucial, I’ll say it again. I’m not using a frying pan, but a skillet.

If you ask for a realistic reason, then it is because a skillet conducts heat slower than a frying pan. Therefore, it is suitable for cooking meals that require delicate heat control.

Personally speaking, I think it looks cooler to use a skillet when cooking outdoors.

Compared to a frying pan, a skillet takes longer to be heated up, it’s heavy, plus it requires more careful use of seasoning. There are lots of demerits. However, I won’t worry about that since I am satisfied with using it.

Setting the skillet over the stove, I poured in a swish of oil.

I then placed the slice of bacon down; its thickness is around 2 cm. It sizzled loudly atop the skillet.

The bacon then gradually released an enticing smell that floated around in the air.

“Yup, smelling great.”

I fried the massive slice of bacon carefully on the skillet. It will definitely taste awesome.

However, it’s quite inconvenient to have only one magic stove because I can’t cook another dish at the same time. As a result, the completed vegetable soup is left alone on the wooden box.

Well, being able to cook a meal, without even carrying any baggage, inside a forest like this could be considered luxurious already, but to aim even higher and higher is what makes us humans, I guess.

“If I have some surplus cash, it might be a good idea to buy another magic stove.”

I don’t know if Podan-san has one more in stock or not. I also don’t know if he will sell it cheaply again too. Since he said these normally cost more than 10 gold coins, I still can’t afford another one yet.

However, if I continue to collect materials like today, I will be able to afford it for sure.

Pondering such things, I flipped over the bacon. Its skin was nice and crispy.

After the other side was properly fried, I added some salt and pepper. Then, I cracked the egg in the available space on the skillet.

The white of the egg took no time at all to become cooked, and I got myself a wonderful sunny-side-up fried egg.

Making sure the bacon was fully cooked and the egg still runny, I turned off the stove.

“Alright, let’s finally dig in!”

After sampling the vegetable soup and now I have to smell the enticing aroma of the bacon, the hunger from my empty stomach has now overcome its limits.

I left the skillet where it is, and ladled my bowl full with vegetable soup.

“Itadakimasu.”

Feeling grateful for the freshly harvested ingredients, I drank down one spoonful of soup.

Both the carrot and daikon were properly stewed and were very mellow.

Furthermore, this single mouthful held the sweetness of the soup stock and other wild plants within. I can feel the different textures of the ingredients with just one bite, and it was more delicious each time I chewed. Its gentle taste makes me feel relaxed.

“Also, these mushrooms are delicious.”

The cap of the Red Mushrooms had a firm texture.

The stalks of Purple Mushrooms were crisp and had a great smell. Very much a high-class ingredient.

If I cook this in a Japanese-style soup [1] or steam it with sake [2], I would probably be able to bring out its unique taste more.

The boiled Black Mushrooms were also soft and springy to eat.

It tastes similar to wood ear mushrooms, but with more flavour.

Devouring the combination of vegetables and wild plants, my stomach calmed down somewhat. Next, I shifted my target to my crispy bacon and fried egg.

Poking the half-cooked yolk, I slather the runny egg that spilled out over the bacon.

Suddenly we’re at the climax, such a luxurious style of eating.

Cutting it into pieces? I’m not gonna do that fine-dining stuff. I stabbed my fork into the thick slice of bacon and ate it.

Inside my mouth, a raging storm of juice from the meat burst forth. Maybe since it was thoroughly grilled on the skillet, the savouriness of the bacon was condensed into its juices.

What mellowed out the strong, meaty taste was the half-cooked egg.

The bacon alone was plenty delicious, but eating it with the yolk adds some more extravagance to the taste.

“……How can eating outdoors be this delicious, I wonder?”

Feeling satisfied over the tastiness of my food, I let a sigh escape my lips.

I felt the warm sunlight filtering through the trees, and heard the leaves rustling as they were blown by the wind.

In the sky, birds were flying and chirping merrily. Once I inhaled deeply, the combined smell of plants and dirt penetrated deep into my lungs.

Cooking and dining while being enveloped by Mother Nature. How wonderful.

“……Once I finish eating my lunch, let’s continue to work hard.”
